123. 2015 Round-Up

December 28, 2015 07:01 - 1 hour - 47.4 MB

Another year has come and gone, and now we need to try and make sense of it. Fortunately, Matt and Ed are up to the task, and in this bumper round-up of the year they talk about some of the big film and TV stories, pitch some ideas for Episode VIII to Rian Johnson (#QuiJohnCandy), before finishing with a countdown of the Shot/Reverse Shot Top 10 Films of 2015.  It's a silly, joyous end to a long, strange year, and we hope that you've enjoyed listening to the show as much as we have enjoyed ma...

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

December 28, 2015 07:00 - 38 minutes - 17.7 MB

Seeing that Matt and Ed spent the better part of a year talking about how much they were looking forward to a new Star Wars movie, it would be downright silly for them not to talk about the film now that it's actually out in the world. To that end, this bonus episode is a spoiler-filled one in which the boys talk about The Force Awakens: what they liked about it, what didn't work, and how it compares to the other films in the saga. Here is a link to the Mike Ryan article, "The Redemption of H...

Christmas Minisode!

December 21, 2015 07:00 - 24 minutes - 11.3 MB

Annoying real-life things like families and that prevented Matt and Ed from being able to record a full episode this week. Instead, they decided to talk before the release of The Force Awakens about what they hope to see (and not to see) in one of the most anticipated films of all time, their favourite (and least favourite) Christmas movies, and how shit turkey is. Think of it as a stocking stuffer ahead of next week's bumper end of year spectacular! Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and have ...

122. Michael Winterbottom

December 14, 2015 07:00 - 46 minutes - 21.4 MB

Matt and Ed finish their year-long series of artist profiles with a discussion of the work of British director Michael Winterbottom, a filmmaker who seems determined to take on every genre imaginable, and who will invent genres if he has to. In addition to discussing how fun his meta experiments can be and how dull his hardcore sex experiment was, they discuss British cinema's inferiority complex, which bands offer the modern equivalent of national service, and reminisce about awkward romanti...

121. Wasted Potential

December 07, 2015 07:00 - 55 minutes - 25.5 MB

Inspired by Spectre and its insistence on squandering the scenery-destroying talents of Christoph Waltz, Matt and Ed are talking about Wasted Potential this week. They discuss artists who don't fulfill their potential due to the actions of others (Orson Welles), because of their own choices (Marlon Brando), or just because they stopped trying (Robert De Niro, Al Pacino etc.). They also wonder if Jesse Eisenberg's awful-looking performance as Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman is secretly brillia...

120. Pixar

November 30, 2015 07:00 - 54 minutes - 25 MB

To mark the release of The Good Dinosaur, as well as the 20th anniversary of the release of Toy Story, Matt and Ed talk about the work and legacy of Pixar. In addition to discussing the merits and oddness of The Good Dinosaur (which involves some mild spoilers), why exactly Cars 2 is awful, and what makes the culture of Pixar unique in big-budget studio filmmaking, they plug Ed's line of sneakers, pitch a show based on the career of Lance Reddick, and wonder if Pixar helped fake the moon land...

119. Matt's Birthday, 2015

November 25, 2015 04:16 - 1 hour - 28.6 MB

It's Matt's Birthday! In keeping with a recently established tradition, that means that this episode is a grab bag of topics decided by the birthday boy, including what films Matt and Ed loved as kids which they are wary of now, the odd experience of watching a film for the first time that has been referenced so much in pop culture that you know every detail about it, and whether or not Star Wars: The Force Awakens has any chance of being good. In between all of that, they look forward to the...

118. Madonna

November 16, 2015 05:21 - 51 minutes - 23.7 MB

It's artist profile time again, and this week Matt and Ed discuss the cinematic work of Madonna. In addition to getting to grips with the (few) highs and (plentiful) lows of her work in cinema, they also try to contextualise her acting and directing in terms of her broader work as a musician and a performer, imagine a version of Swept Away starring Jason Statham, and accidentally create Middle Earth's greatest rapper.

117. Spies

November 09, 2015 05:07 - 57 minutes - 26.2 MB

There's a new Bond film out and, despite planning to, neither Matt or Ed were actually able to see it in time for this episode on Spies and espionage in cinema. Regardless of a lack of Spectre discussion, they still have plenty to talk about since 2015 has seen the release of a surprisingly large number of spy movies, ranging from the moodiness of Bond to the goofiness of Spy. They delve into the sociological and psychological underpinnings of spy movies, wonder why there are so few examples ...

116. Halloween Special 2015

November 02, 2015 07:00 - 55 minutes - 25.2 MB

It's a veritable Werewolf Bar Mitzvah this week as Matt and Ed tackle things both spooky and scary. After discussing some not especially frightening news (unless you find the prospect of an all-female Ocean's Eleven unduly threatening, in which case get over it), they talk about Charlie Lyne's new documentary Fear Itself (which is available exclusively on the BBC iPlayer), before engaging in a more general natter about terrifying moments in otherwise benign movies, their favourite horror film...

115. Cinemagoing

October 26, 2015 07:00 - 1 hour - 30.6 MB

In what can only be described as a jam-packed episode, Matt & Ed, inspired by an interview with UCL professor Melvyn Stokes, who is conducting a study of British cinemagoing habits in the 1960s, talk about their own cinemagoing experiences. This very quickly shifts to them wondering whether or not cinema as a mass medium is doomed, and whether George Lucas is a Cassandra-like prophet of things to come. Scary stuff.  Before that, though, they tackle the week's news (which is dominated by Back ...

114. Obsession

October 19, 2015 07:00 - 56 minutes - 25.8 MB

Matt and Ed are obsessed with the idea of Obsession this week, an interest which takes the form of a discussion of films about obsession, how directors' obsessions can manifest in their work, and the ways in which cinema is uniquely suited to exploring the topic. They also talk about the failure of Pan, unnerving audience responses to films, and pitch a Hans Gruber-centric prequel to Die Hard. 00:00:00 - 00:18:50 - Intro & News00:18:51 - 00:52:35 - Discussion of Obsession in cinema00:52:36 - ...

113. Junun/High Concept

October 12, 2015 07:00 - 59 minutes - 27.5 MB

This week's episode is a sort of double A-side in which the first half is largely given over to a discussion of Paul Thomas Anderson's new documentary Junun, and what its release via the streaming service MUBI could mean for future idiosyncratic releases from major filmmakers (or major works from idiosyncratic filmmakers). The second half concerns the idea of High Concept filmmaking, and the many permutations of that term, from '80s blockbusters to indie films with interesting, easily sellabl...

112. Bette Davis

October 05, 2015 07:00 - 41 minutes - 18.9 MB

In their latest Artist Profile, Matt and Ed take a look at the life and career of Bette Davis, one of the most indomitable women ever to grace the silver screen. In addition to discussing her work in films both good and bad, they talk about her status as a camp and feminist icon, her legendary feud with Joan Crawford, and the many milestones she established during a truly spectacular career. Show Notes 00:00:00 - 00:02:24 - Intro00:02:25 - 00:40:13 - Matt and Ed discuss the life and career of...

111. Autumn/Winter 2015 Preview

September 28, 2015 07:00 - 1 hour - 27.6 MB

After an unscheduled week off, Matt and Ed are back with a vengeance to talk about all the exciting and/or interesting films scheduled to come out between now and the end of the year. In addition to discussing whether or not they're anticipating the likes of The Martian, Crimson Peak, The Revenant and Spectre, they talk about the Emmys, franchises that Ridley Scott could revisit instead of the Alien/Prometheus universe, and whether all movie biopics are built upon the idea that "behind every ...

110. Peak TV

September 14, 2015 07:00 - 1 hour - 29.4 MB

Back in March of 2012, Matt and Ed discussed the state of television for the fourth episode of this podcast. Back then, they thought that people seemed pretty excited about working in TV, and that streaming might catch on. A little over three years later, they return to the subject to assess their mild predictions and consider the era of so-called "Peak TV", a term coined after FX President John Landgraf talked at the TCA tour about how there is too much good TV.  They consider the meaning of...

109. Star Wars

September 07, 2015 07:00 - 58 minutes - 27 MB

In the wake of Force Friday, which saw thousands of people going bonkers for toys for a film which isn't even out for three months, Matt and Ed take stock of Star Wars as a long-running franchise, a cultural monolith, and as significant part of their own personal development as film fans.  Along the way, Matt discusses the justly forgotten Matthew Weiner movie Are You Here, Ed describes one of the most enjoyably crazy Star Wars Expanded Universe stories (it involves Jabba's Palace and disembo...

108. Evolution

August 31, 2015 07:00 - 57 minutes - 26.1 MB

This week's episode finds Matt & Ed discussing evolution. Not the actual scientific theory, but the ways in which artists change over the course of their careers, and how changes in an artist's style or genre impact their relationship with their audience. They also take the opportunity to talk about how their own tastes have changed, Matt coins the most baffling campaign slogan ever, and Ed has some choice words for Peter Bogdanovich. Show Notes 00:00:00 - 00:18:08 - Intro and discussion of t...

107. Jerry Bruckheimer

August 24, 2015 07:00 - 50 minutes - 23.2 MB

For their seventh artist profile, Matt and Ed step a little bit out of their comfort zone by discussing someone who a) isn't an actor or director and b) hasn't made all that much work that they actually like. The person is question is Jerry Bruckheimer, the uber-producer who came to prominence in the 1980s with films like Flashdance, Top Gun and the Beverly Hills Cop series, and who has remained one of the most successful producers in Hollywood for three decades. As part of the discussion th...

106. True Detective: Season Two

August 17, 2015 05:24 - 58 minutes - 26.9 MB

To mark the end of season two of HBO's anthology series True Detective, which generated as much discussion online as the first season did, albeit for very different reasons, Matt and Ed decided to dig into how one of last year's most acclaimed shows became one of this year's most derided.  In addition to figuring out just what went wrong with season two, they discuss the glut of Disney and Star Wars news that came out of the D23 expo this weekend, the possible return of Deadwood, and whether ...

105. Ed's Birthday, 2015

August 10, 2015 05:07 - 56 minutes - 25.9 MB

In what will hopefully become a tradition for the show, this week dispenses with having a set theme in order to celebrate one of the hosts' birthday. In this instance, the host in question is Ed. There's still talk of what's been going on in film and television this week - including discussion about the fallout from Josh Trank's tweet disowning Fantastic Four and Jon Stewart's departure from The Daily Show - but the core of the episode is an amorphous discussion between Matt and Ed about ambi...

104. Disney

August 03, 2015 05:14 - 56 minutes - 25.8 MB

Marking the culmination of a long-running project for Matt, who has spent much of the last year watching most of Disney's animated movies, this episode focuses on the animated movies of Disney. In addition to that, Matt and Ed talk about Ian McShane going Game of Thrones, pitch a Disney take on the gunpowder plot, and the ways in which Disney's corporate elements make it surprisingly willing to take big risks. Show Notes 00:00:00 - 00:12:23 - Intro & Discussion of the week's news.00:12:24 - 0...

103. Eddie Murphy

July 27, 2015 07:00 - 56 minutes - 26 MB

As promised back in the Burt Lancaster episode, Matt and Ed follow-up quickly with an episode of one of the most electrifying and frustrating actors in film history, Eddie Murphy. In addition to discussing his origins as a standup and on Saturday Night Live, they talk about his meteoric rise in the 1980s, his absolute nadir in the mid-'00s, and the reason behind his anticlimactic return to SNL earlier this year. Show Notes 0:00:00 - 0:00:46 - Intro0:00:47 - 0:55:45 - Profile of Eddie Murphy0:...

102. Special Effects

July 20, 2015 07:00 - 58 minutes - 26.6 MB

Spurred on by the Star Wars panel at Comic-Con, where J.J. Abrams and others placed a strong emphasis on the film's use of practical effects, Matt and Ed decided to discuss the history and current state of special effects in cinema. Amongst talk of how CGI affects audiences and why it can harm actors' performances, they talk about the trailers shown at Comic-Con for films they probably won't see, whether the Emmys mean anything, and get sidetracked by Arrested Development, because they're onl...

101. Burt Lancaster

July 13, 2015 07:00 - 49 minutes - 22.7 MB

After a few weeks away from it, this week finds Matt and Ed returning to their ongoing series of artist profiles with an episode dedicated to a firm favourite, actor/producer Burt Lancaster. In addition to discussing the best and worst of Mr. Lancaster's career, they talk about his physicality, his knack for playing complex and morally ambiguous characters, and his willingness to take risks.  They also come up with the ultimate Michael J. Fox film, and pay tribute to the excellent film websit...

Week Off Minisode

July 06, 2015 07:00 - 19 minutes - 8.87 MB

We aren't able to provide a full episode this week as we had initially planned due to a scheduling conflict. However, since we've been away for a few weeks and there are stories that Matt and Ed want to talk about, we have prepared this minisode for your delectation. In this short, sharp chat, they talk about the continuing success of Jurassic World, which continues to eat records like an Indominus Rex chomping on people, the news that Ava DuVernay has passed on directing Black Panther for Ma...

Episode 100!

June 25, 2015 07:00 - 1 hour - 40.8 MB

In this Very Special Episode, Matt and Ed convene in the same bloody room for once to celebrate the 100th episode of Shot/Reverse Shot! To mark the occasion, they took questions from listeners via Twitter, Facebook, and in person and endeavored to answer as many of them as possible. With such a broad brief, the episode encompasses everything from their favourite cinemas, snacks, scores, and actors, to in-depth discussions of Hollywood's odd unwillingness to cast gay men in leading roles and t...

99. Jurassic World

June 15, 2015 07:00 - 1 hour - 28.4 MB

Much like everyone else on Earth, Matt and Ed went to see Jurassic World this weekend and they had a lot of thoughts about it. After talking about the death of Christopher Lee, they delve into their feelings about the first Jurassic Park, the deficiencies in Jurassic World's script, and why they on balance like the film even if they have massive problems with it. Show Notes: 00:00-15:54 - Intro & discussion of the week's news.15:55-57:10 - Matt and Ed discuss Jurassic World.57:11-1:01:58 - Sh...

98. Jaws at 40

June 08, 2015 07:00 - 59 minutes - 27.3 MB

On June 20th, 1975, Jaws was unleashed upon American audiences for the first time, in the process changing how people viewed the ocean, and how studios viewed the summer, forever. To mark this momentous occasion, Matt and Ed sit down to talk about the influence that the film has had, the ways in which it feels both part of the New Hollywood movement and separate from it, and how it relates to the work of Henrik Ibsen. And, of course, why they both really love it. They also ponder whether a re...

97. Doc/Fest 2015, Or, Matt and Ed Can't Handle The Truth!

June 01, 2015 07:00 - 59 minutes - 27.2 MB

This Friday sees the start of Sheffield Doc/Fest, one of the biggest and best documentary festivals in the world and a favourite of this show. Unfortunately, for the first time in years, neither Matt or Ed are able to tend this year due to other commitments and the Atlantic Ocean, respectively. To commiserate, they talk about what they love about Doc/Fest, then use that as an opportunity to talk about different strains of documentary filmmaking, such as activist docs like Blackfish and rock d...

96. Mad Men

May 25, 2015 07:00 - 57 minutes - 26.2 MB

Historians will no doubt mark May 17, 2015 as the day the sixties died, as it was on that day that AMC's Mad Men ended its stellar seven season run. Matt and Ed felt that they had to mark the passing of a great show by discussing its phenomenal writing, directing and acting, as well as its significance as a key text in the ongoing American television renaissance. They also find time to talk about their individual disappointment about Tomorrowland and Pitch Perfect 2, and their shared sadness ...

95. Nostalgia

May 18, 2015 08:00 - 53 minutes - 24.7 MB

This week, like a couple of Billy Pilgrims, Matt and Ed are looking backwards and forwards simultaneously as they talk about nostalgia, and how it has informed films like the marketing behind the recently released Mad Max: Fury Road and the forthcoming Jurassic Park and Vacation sequels. They discuss the unstable nature of nostalgia, which can bring fans onboard or completely alienate them if it isn't used correctly, how some films manage to subvert nostalgia in interesting ways, as well as t...

94. Ang Lee

May 10, 2015 05:01 - 58 minutes - 26.9 MB

In the fourth SRS Artist Profile, Matt and Ed look at the work of Ang Lee, a filmmaker who has worked in multiple genres, on multiple continents and in multiple languages over the course of his career, creating a body of work which is incredibly diverse yet distinctly his own. They discuss the reasons why his early films, which dealt with cross-generational conflict and Taiwanese identity in the West, made him the perfect choice to direct a Jane Austen adaptation, his ill-advised venture into...

93. Avengers: Age of Ultron

May 04, 2015 03:20 - 38 minutes - 17.6 MB

Spoiler Warning: This episode contains discussion of specific plot points in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but also of a crucial plot point in the Civil War comics which may be a spoiler for the forthcoming Civil War film (but then again may not). If you want to avoid the Civil War spoilers, then please skip this timecode: 31:30-33:00. A new blockbuster has arrived so the world sent up the SRS signal and Matt and Ed answered the call.(If you're wondering, the signal is a silhouette of Jeff Bridges...

92. Unmade Films

April 27, 2015 01:41 - 44 minutes - 20.5 MB

Inspired by the very entertaining documentary Jodorowsky's Dune, about one of the most fascinating and influential films never made, this week's episode revolves around films that only exist in the minds of their creators, or in some magical pocket dimension where all possibilities happen at once. In exploring the topic, Matt and Ed talk about films that were made at some point but had a potentially more interesting version somewhere in their development, films that never made it past the scr...

91. Marketing and Hype

April 20, 2015 02:13 - 50 minutes - 23.3 MB

After a punishing week that saw the release of a trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a teaser for the trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a trailer for Fantastic Four: This Time We'll Get It Right, We Promise and, of course, the Internet-breaking trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Matt and Ed decided to sit down and talk about the state of movie marketing today. In addition to freaking out a little bit over seeing Han and Chewie on screen again, they discuss the...

90. Susan Sarandon

April 13, 2015 03:20 - 58 minutes - 26.6 MB

For their latest artist profile, Matt and Ed decided to discuss the work of Susan Sarandon. As well as talking about her breakthrough as Janet in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and career highlights from the '80s and '90s, they talk about what the different roles she has played say about sexism in Hollywood and how her choices both play into and challenge it, whether or not her work in an Adam Sandler vehicle can be classified as a transgression against the Orthodoxy, and Ed describes the near...

89. Creative Partnerships

March 30, 2015 04:23 - 56 minutes - 51.5 MB

Following the news that John Williams will not be composing the score for Steven Spielberg's forthcoming Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies, Matt and Ed decided to talk about long-running and significant creative partnerships in film. As well as director/composer combinations like Spielberg/Williams, Hitchcock/Hermann and Kitano/Hisaishi, they discuss what working with the same editor from film to film gives a director, how working with the same actors can allow filmmakers to plumb new depths,...

88. Shakespeare

March 23, 2015 03:59 - 57 minutes - 52.8 MB

Partly inspired by news of a new, 300-fied version of Romeo & Juliet, but largely because they're both fans, this week finds Matt and Ed talking about cinematic adaptations of the works of William Shakespeare. In addition to discussing good adaptations and bad adaptation, traditional adaptations and adventurous adaptations, they discuss their own personal relationships with Shakespeare's work, including a brief digression on theclassic '90s Disney series Gargoyles, the reinterment of Richard ...

87. Matt and Ed Have Nothing

March 16, 2015 02:56 - 51 minutes - 47.4 MB

In a break from the usual format, this episode of Shot/Reverse Shot isn't based around any particular theme. With no central topic to discuss this week, Matt and Ed instead discuss some of the big stories of the week including the death of Terry Pratchett, the rapidly expanding Ghostbusters universe, HBO's The Jinx, and some film about wars among the stars. They also try to figure out a way of proving once and for all just how tall Vince Vaughn is.

86. What Does It Take For A Film To Flop?

March 09, 2015 04:10 - 57 minutes - 52.6 MB

Inspired by the spectacular lack of success of Andy and Lana Wachowski's Jupiter Ascending, this week's episode is given over to films that failed and failed big at the box office. After discussing the aforementioned space opera and the Wachowskis' other flops, Matt and Ed talk about some of the biggest money losers ever, how hard it is to determine how much money a film actually lost, and what factors can make a film fail.

85. Parks and Recreation

March 02, 2015 03:30 - 52 minutes - 48.2 MB

We're saying goodbye to the residents of Pawnee, Indiana this week as Parks and Recreation ascends to sitcom heaven. Matt and Ed talk about what made the show so special, how jumping forward three years helped make the final season so strong, and offer up their favourite episodes, jokes and characters from one of the deepest benches in sitcom history.  They also pay tribute to Harris Wittels, a writer for the show and prodigiously talented comedian who passed away suddenly just prior to the f...

84. Clint Eastwood

February 22, 2015 07:59 - 1 hour - 58 MB

Shot/Reverse Shot have got sunshine in a bag this week because Matt and Ed are talking about the work of Clint Eastwood. In between discussing French documentaries and struggling to say "Joe Pesci," they delve into Eastwood's status as an icon of the Western genre, the merits of American Sniper (and the toxicity of the debate surrounding it), and lay into Jersey Boys with a passion and intensity alien to anyone involved with that film.

83. Why Do We Care About the Oscars?

February 15, 2015 05:01 - 47 minutes - 21.7 MB

With the Academy Awards mere days away, Matt and Ed discuss why exactly they care about the Oscars, especially since they both occasionally hypocritically dismiss them as not really meaning anything. In so doing, they talk about the real commercial and artistic impact that an Oscar nomination can have, wonder if the Academy secretly hate Martin Landau, and talk about some of the odder wins/snubs in Oscar history. They also try to predict who will win on Sunday, foolishly. Notes: - Here is th...

82. Historical Accuracy

February 09, 2015 03:49 - 34 minutes - 15.9 MB

Considering the ongoing controversy surrounding Ava DuVernay's civil rights drama Selma and its relatively minor deviations from history (as well as the ongoing non-controversy surrounding Morten Tyldum's The Imitation Game and its multiple, egregious deviations from history) Matt and Ed decided to ask why historical inaccuracy is so often used as a criticism against works of fiction, where exactly the line  between inaccuracy and artistic license lies, and wonder if Dave Lister holds the rea...

81. Why Are There So Few Perfect Trilogies?

February 01, 2015 14:35 - 36 minutes - 16.9 MB

This week, Matt and Ed ponder why it is that so many film series are able to produce two good-to-great films, then fumble it when they have to make a final film to round out the trilogy. What is it about third films that makes them so prone to failure, and why do some series manage to avoid those pitfalls? They try to answer those questions, though not without deviating into an apoplectic rant about Return of the Jedi.

80. Richard Linklater

January 28, 2015 03:19 - 51 minutes - 23.6 MB

In the first of what will become a monthly feature, this episode finds Matt and Ed discussing the career of director Richard Linklater, the veteran of American independent cinema who is currently the toast of the town thanks to the critical and commercial success of Boyhood. To add a structure to this episode and all future artist profiles, the boys have picked five of Linklater's films to focus on, each of which falls into a specific category: Breakthrough, Most Successful, Oddity, Dud and C...

79. The Hobbit Trilogy

January 19, 2015 07:09 - 1 hour - 31.4 MB

December saw the release of the third and final film in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy, a series which saw the man who turned a series of dense books into three fairly swift films do the opposite by transforming a short, snappy novel into three bloated epics. As fans of Jackson's Lord of the Rings films, not to mention his pre-LOTR work, who were disappointed by the Hobbitses, Matt and Ed decided to sit down and talk about the two trilogies in depth in order to figure out where the second tri...

78. 2015 Preview

January 12, 2015 04:21 - 1 hour - 33.8 MB

Happy New Year! We're back and we're looking forward to what lies on the horizon in 2015 in our traditional preview. We talk about the films we're excited about, the ones that we're curious about, and the ones that are sure to dominate the cultural conversation for weeks and months at a time. We also highlight some TV shows that we're excited about, and offer (hopefully) tantalising glimpses of what we have planned for the podcast itself in the year ahead.

77. 2014 Round-up

December 22, 2014 04:55 - 1 hour - 50.3 MB

2014 was a great year for cinema and a pretty good one for Shot/Reverse Shot. The same kind of terrible films got released that somehow get green lit every year, but you seemingly couldn't move for interesting, intelligent and entertaining films in pretty much every genre and at most budgets. Meanwhile, we put out more episodes than we ever have before, completed our Alternate 100 project, and sought to push ourselves and the format of the show as much as we possibly could.  We've got great p...
