Autism is challenging parents, families, schools and communities in ways few could have ever imagined. The CDC tells us that 1 in 59 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with autism, and that boys are 4 times more likely to be diagnosed. Research also shows that the cost of caring for Americans with autism reached $268 billion in 2015.  In the absence of more-effective interventions and support those costs are projected to rise to $461 billion by 2025. https://www.autismspeaks.org/autism-facts-and-figures

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg? The real costs are much higher in terms of emotional stress and lost economic opportunities.

It is a BIG problem.

Shaji Nair’s son was diagnosed with Autism at the age of three. Shaji and his wife went on a journey to educate themselves on Autism and look for solutions. They realized that the medical profession, for good reasons, is heavily regulated, and that one of the unintended consequences of regulation is that it stifles innovation.

Both parents have IT backgrounds, and so they decided something needed to be done. He left behind his corporate career and funded the Future In Technology Summit. The organization hosts Future of Technology Summits around the world. One of the big goals is to create a bridge between the autism community and technology leadership, to jointly identify challenges to help improve the lives of people with autism around the world.

In this episode Shaji talks about his mission to improve the lives of individuals and families living with autism, gives us the run down on the upcoming Future of Technology Summit in Washington DC (February 2019), and shares his views of the potential impacts of technology on the coming decades.
