Parents with teenage children are in uncharted territory.

Forbes Magazine reports that student debt has reached $1.5 Trillion.

Stats tell us that 50% of Americans under the age of 30 are underemployed or unemployed.

The Conference Board reports that 53% of workers in the United States are unhappy (Forbes).

Kids (and that’s what teenagers are even if they don’t believe it) are facing intense pressure to figure things out. Many are living in fear of making a bad decision.

What is the parents role in preparing their kids for the future?

Brian Schulman advocates a keep it simple approach.

“What’s important is to support our kids, to foster creativity, to let them know it’s okay to fall. And to support them when they do fall, and to support them when they do fall, dust em off and push them on their way, and be there along the way just like a marathon, and let them know hey you can do this. You’re doing a great job. It’s okay to fall, learn from that, remember for next time and keep going, just keep pushing forward, because when you keep pushing forward, no matter what it is, you will always succeed.”

I’d love to hear from parents of teenage kids. How are you handling the discussion about the future?
