Today I wanted to tell the story of Louis Zamperini, who was an Olympic athlete, WWII pilot and prisoner of war.

Zamperini’s plane was shot down over the South Pacific and he survived 47 days at sea before being captured by the Japanese. Unfortunately his nightmare had only begun as he was mercilessly tortured by a guard nicknamed “The Bird.”

When Zamperini returned after the war he suffered from PTSD and nightmares. Then he became a born-again Christian and that path led him to being able to forgive his torturer. His nightmares ended and he even tried to meet with “The Bird” to forgive him and offer him a path of spirituality.

The whole story is chronicled in the book Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand and it is a beautiful tale of courage, faith, healing and forgiveness.
