This lecture discusses the Stoic philosopher Epictetus' work, the Discourses, and focuses on his discussion of the rational faculty, which is also the same as the "ruling faculty" of the human being (as well as the faculty of choice). In this discussion, taken from one of my classroom lectures, we discuss what Epictetus means by the rational faculty, how it is self-referential, and why it is so fundamentally important in Stoic philosophy.
