This lecture discusses the 16th century philosopher Rene Descartes' work The Discourse on Method, and focuses on his discussion at the end of part 4 of whether we can trust the truth of our waking thoughts or not - and whether we can distinguish them apart from thoughts arising in dreams.

The veracity and goodness of God plays a central role in Descartes' argument here, since that allows him to use the criterion of "clear and distinct" conceptions for the truth of our thoughts or ideas.
