This lecture discusses the Stoic philosopher Epictetus' work, the Discourses, and focuses on his discussion about the beginnings of philosophy. By contrast to other ancient philosophers, Epictetus takes the inception of philosophy to reside in the experience of conflict between human beings and their ideas about what is good, reasonable, and true. Philosophy attempts to provide some way of determining who has matters right.
