This lecture discusses key ideas from the work of the ancient philosopher and ruler, Julian the Emperor (also known as Julian the Apostate), Oration 6, "To The Uneducated Cynics".

It focuses specifically on Julian's explanation of what in his view philosophy is and ought to be. He has in mind not only the philosophical school or movement of Cynicism, but also various Platonic, Aristotelian, Epicurean, Stoic, and Skeptic schools and movements.
