Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics Book 6 - Intellectual Virtues And Parts Of The Soul

This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher Aristotle's work of moral theory, the Nicomachean Ethics.

Specifically it focuses focuses on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics book 6, and examines his discussion of the intellectual virtues and the parts of the human soul in book 6.

Aristotle distinguishes between two higher, intellectual or rational parts of the soul, one concerned with theoretical matters, which are from necessity and whose principles do not change, and the other with practical matters, which have to do with action and production.

Three of the intellectual virtues - scientific knowledge (episteme), intellect or intuition (nous), and wisdom (sophia) - are habits that perfect the highest part of the soul in human beings. Two other intellectual virtues - practical wisdom (phronesis) and art or skill (techne) - perfect the second-highest, practical part of the soul.
