We have so many trailers to talk about this week! CINDERELLA, PEANUTS, and LucasFilm's STRANGE MAGIC which was dropped on our unsuspecting laps. The question is... does it hurt or feel just right? Speaking of feeling just right, we interview the last of the three winners of our #RubberOnionFanArt competition, Ronald Chaparro. And I bring back the Rapid Fire segment so we can adjust the stories you listeners submitted that we didn't have enough time/thought to address as a full story segment....

Episode 52 - Freelance Horror Stories

October 29, 2014 21:32 - 2 hours - 94.2 MB

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! This week we reached out to other animators and creatives to give us their worst experiences in freelance that they could share with us like ghost stories around a campfire. Spooooooky! The idea is that if you're thinking of getting into freelance or can relate to some of these stories, they can serve as a heads-up on what you might encounter and/or how to prevent them. See? It's fun AND educational. I'm very proud of this episode so I hope you enjoy it and get lots of gre...

This week we have a very special interview: Alan Becker, creator of the hit "Animator vs Animation" stick-fight series joins us to talk about his experience with Kickstarter, what happened when his first short went viral, and how he actually does the things he does! There's a lot of really great stuff here for young and old animators from the Indie scene, especially when he starts talking about when and how he had to navigate the murky waters of a viral hit. Episode 50 - One Year Anniversary Clusterfun

October 15, 2014 16:28 - 3 hours - 127 MB

We wanted to do something special for our anniversary episode, so it was LIVE. We also received a bunch of voicemails from you which made us so happy! But the fates seem to have other things in mind when we had traffic, timezone confusion, and a wrecked computer thrown at us. In a very RubberOnion fashion, though, we decided that computers be damned... we were going to do this! Stephen and Rob huddled around a tablet and Pat kept the stories rolling and we produced an episode of more fun and...

October 01, 2014 19:33 - 1 hour - 48.9 MB

Speed round! Pat and Stephen had to get to trivia night because who else's going to know what year Space Jam was released (ahem 1996)? We all watched the Simpsons/Family Guy crossover episode and have some words. Don Hertzfeldt's Simpsons couch gag made people confused and intrigued. Also, the CW cancelled its Saturday morning cartoon lineup, the last of its kind on network TV, and you might be surprised what we think about that. And finally, we have clips and trailers to talk about! CLICK ...

Episode 47 - Two and a Half Men

September 25, 2014 00:15 - 1 hour - 74.9 MB

Pat's back! Feels so good to have the gang together for this one because we've got some great stories suggested by YOU. "Popeye", "Where Are They Now" animated short, "Deadpool" greenlit, "Rick and Morty" co-creator Justin Roiland fighting the Union, The Hub dies, Stephen updated an animation from 2010, and we inspire people apparently... seriously. And we have another submitted question! You will enjoy this one. You will. I promise. Kinda. CLICK HERE to go to the full blog post & leave a c...

September 17, 2014 17:40 - 1 hour - 81.5 MB

With a slow news week, Rob and Stephen settle down and talk about something bugging Rob lately: "how to be an animator AND have a life." We talk about productivity methods, past experiences, full time VS freelance, and of course -- stories! And also... VIEWER QUESTIONS!! Episode 44 - Purse on Vacation

September 03, 2014 18:02 - 1 hour - 62.5 MB

Is "Hello Kitty" a cat or isn't she?! Is "Bojack Horseman" any good? Is Marvel actually making a "Guardians of the Galaxy" animated series? She is, it is, and they aren't. There, now you don't need to listen to the episode. But if you didn't you'd miss our soothing voices and witty quips! Rob has some major technical issues and it made for an Intro that made me laugh so hard while I was cutting it together I had to take a break to wipe the tears from my eyes. August 27, 2014 16:40 - 1 hour - 68 MB

The Emmys happened! They're a thing! We talk about the winners and our love for "Bob's Burgers" as well as the Every Simpsons Ever marathon happening on FXX (whatever THAT channel is...). The great Lord/Sir/Mr. Amazing Richard Attenborough passed away and we honor him, but then he honors us right back by giving us maybe the greatest transition we've ever done (divined through Pat, who's back this episode)! And don't say we never did anything for you, because we read another email exchange be...

August 20, 2014 18:18 - 2 hours - 88.2 MB

Rob and Stephen saw the new "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (2014) film... and have some words. We break it down and compare it in depth with other iterations of the franchise such as the 1990 movie, the 1987 cartoon series, 2003 cartoon series, and the original and new IDW comic book! Also, in true RubberOnion fashion... we do our own rendition of a beloved song. Listen for it! So what did you think of the movie and our review? Episode 39 - The Face of the Arms

July 30, 2014 16:13 - 1 hour - 56.7 MB

We're back! Last week's podcast was an awesome (if I do say so myself) old-timey radio show style episode... but this week we're back on animation stories from the week. We saw 5 minutes of the Simpsons/Family Guy crossover, the Mike Tyson Mysteries trailer, the Smiley face is getting its own show, and LAIKA's CEO wants to make hand-drawn animated films. Episode 36 - Diergo Kattora

July 09, 2014 18:51 - 2 hours - 89.8 MB

We have a monster of an episode this week! Two weeks of stories jam packed into one awesome episode with the entire crew: Stephen, Rob, & Pat. We talk about an email exchange between a writer and a producer, Glen Keane's new animated short "Duet," and some kid made a Kickstarter campaign to make potato salad and for some reason has earned $70,000+ (as of this post). Oh also, Rob met Shaggy and made a new animated short (not related)! Enjoy this delicious 2 hour episode... we hope it's as fun...

Episode 35 - Onion House

July 03, 2014 18:55 - 2 hours - 91.4 MB

Pat couldn't join in this week, so Stephen and Rob decided to discuss their own experiences in building an animation brand (indie and freelance) on the internet, and what trials, tribulations, and learning experiences they had to go through to get where they are now. But in other less upsetting news, Genndy Tartakovsky's "Popeye" (2016) CGI film has a new image associated with it and it looks great! We have singing... we have stories... we have animation stories (this being an "animation podcast," it seemed appropriate)... what DON'T we have?! Episode 32 - Birthday Birthday Something Something

June 12, 2014 01:34 - 1 hour - 64.4 MB

It's Rob's Birthday!! It was Pat's Birthday last week!! And I still make them talk to me about cartoons! This week, we actually start the discussion with the Angry Video Game Nerd movie, because as Indie creators ourselves we're happy when one of our own (same medium or not) breaks ground on a huge development like this. And you know what? It doesn't stop there, Signe Baumane is another Indie creator who is making her first feature length animated film, "Rocks in my Pockets" and it's got a t...

Episode 31 - Diamond in the Mouth

June 04, 2014 20:13 - 1 hour - 63.9 MB

We kicked off June with another LIVE episode of the podcast! We talked about Reading Rainbow, gushed over Mukpuddy's work, loved the "Song of the Sea" trailer, and discussed Sony VFX house Imageworks leaving the US for greener tax credit pastures of the great north in Vancouver. But not before we could talk about Godzilla and Maleficent, however... two movies on opposite ends of the spectrum in numerous ways. Thanks to everyone who showed up for the live taping and joined us in the chat room...

May 28, 2014 22:35 - 1 hour - 60.5 MB

This week we have listener submitted questions (!!) but not before talking about the "Big Hero 6" trailer, "Happy" the happy meal mascot, and a couple other stories. Also, what would The Rubber Onion podcast be without some weird tangents? Behold as we talk about music we don't like and discuss the merits of the Michael Bay opus, "Pain & Gain." And on a serious note, thanks to everyone who's been listening and supporting this podcast! You're awesome and really have made doing this fun and wo...

Episode 29 - QVCinderella

May 22, 2014 01:48 - 1 hour - 54 MB

Stephen was traveling to and from the UK this week, and thus is sick and jet-lagged. We recorded this after midnight so Pat is attempting to be quiet. That leaves Rob to be the energetic & most eloquent of the three. So we talk about the Simpsons/Family Guy crossover, new "Big Hero 6" stills, and by popular demand we talk through the story behind the financial failure of "Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return." Enjoy our sleepy drunk, low, and sickly sensual voices speak to the tune of animation s...

Episode 28 - Andy Serkissmyass

May 14, 2014 15:55 - 1 hour - 60.3 MB

Andy Serkis is an ass. We talk about that & the stuff he said in a recent interview but 1ST... "MIKE TYSON MYSTERIES!" This is a thing, you guys, it's going to be on Adult Swim's 2014 lineup and it sounds amazing. We also talk about the "Akira" live-action fan film trailer & Adam Sandler determined to ruin one of my favorite animated shorts from 2010, "Pixels." Rob and Stephen recorded this a day early so Pat recorded his thoughts on the stories and is dropped in randomly throughout the podc...

"The Simpsons" LEGO episode happened, DreamWorks launches a YouTube channel, and "The Flintstones" head back to the big screen! We also discuss the "TimeOut Top 100 Animated Films" list and our personal favorites. Oh and we also talk pooping... because we're adults. Episode 26 - Can We Edit That One Out?

April 30, 2014 17:42 - 2 hours - 90.7 MB

And we finally break the 2hr mark! That's right, we talk about Batman and The Simpsons -- listing off our favorite episodes and moments -- and then shift over to talking about sexism in movies and the Bechdel test again. But if that's not enough, we close out the podcast with about 30min of discussing racism (centered around a story about "The Jungle Book")... so it's a super light and breezy listen. Oh, and Pat sings! As always, I encourage anyone to post their thoughts and feelings in the ...

Episode 25 - I Do Mickey Mouse

April 23, 2014 17:54 - 1 hour - 81.4 MB

Rob and Stephen talk about animation: where they got started, thoughts on where animation is going, and how to stay young & naive in a world that keeps knocking down your optimism. We were going to talk about some stories from this week, but since Pat is not with us on this episode we just ended up talking about some of the more "animator" parts of animation. Oh and let's not forget... this episode ends in violence! Not kidding. Hope all of you enjoy it and we'd love to hear what you have to...

Episode 23 - Unrelated Vomit Stories

April 10, 2014 01:15 - 1 hour - 62.9 MB

Archie's gonna die! Rob was on Comedy Central! We tell vomit stories! So many things happening. This was our second attempt at a live podcast and we had a great turnout in the chat! Everyone was suggesting names for the title of the podcast and we ultimately chose the one Ryan from Mukpuddy animation studio suggested. This is also the first time we have something unique for both those who saw the podcast live and those of you listening here... success! But what I really want to know is... wh...

Episode 22 - TMNT (2014) Trailer Talk

April 02, 2014 21:40 - 1 hour - 63.6 MB

This week's podcast is all about the TMNT (2014) first trailer and how much it sucks... and why. We (meaning Stephen mostly, let's be honest) break down every incarnation of the Turtles and how things got to be where we are now, with two great incarnations and a possible disaster on the way. Also, Rob tells a sad story at the end you won't want to miss! This week, the audio was recorded off a LIVE broadcast with viewers and errrrrrrything. Fans made images, illustrations (below) and comments...

Episode 21 - Beefy Teenage Mutant Ninja Babies

March 26, 2014 19:27 - 1 hour - 55.3 MB

This episode might have my favorite segment in it so far where we rip up eHarmony's industry-specific list "15 Reasons to Date an Animator." Rob & Stephen are flying solo this episode with Pat off fighting crime for the week... and it goes as you might guess. Character voices are created, stories are told, transitions are fumbled, innuendos are made. But first, we HAD to talk about new info about the TMNT movie coming out... because Stephen... Episode 20 - It's a Pube, Charlie Brown

March 20, 2014 00:12 - 1 hour - 70.8 MB

A bunch of the things we talk about this week were actually stories that broke just yesterday! The new Peanuts teaser trailer hit this week and impressed everyone except, predictably, Pat. Also, in the world of "what-the-what-really-are-you-serious?!"... Sofia Coppola is rumored to be directing a Live-Action "The Little Mermaid." Finally, "The Incredibles 2" was confirmed, and so was "Cars 3"... what?! So we talk about those things. Enjoy all these talks! CLICK HERE to go to the full blog p...

Episode 18 - Adele Dazeem

March 05, 2014 23:21 - 1 hour - 72.5 MB

Long live Adele Dazeem!! The Oscars were this weekend so we talk about them out of mostly obligation, but the real stories are with our own Rob Yulfo and Pat Ryan coming out with brand new creative content! Rob's got a new animated short and Pat has just started a Sci-Fi radio show series (both embedded here). We also talk about painted movie posters, Bill Waterson's new "comic", the documentary on the Rhythm & Hues bankruptcy and the VFX issue as a whole. This one was recorded in one long s...

Episode 17 - Jurassic Pat

February 26, 2014 23:18 - 1 hour - 58.7 MB

Even with Stephen still on the road the podcasts don't stop... not with tablets, mobile hotspots, and coffee shops! This week had simultaneously the greatest rumor & the biggest, immediate letdown of that rumor. But with that, there's good news about Spectacular Spider-Man finally coming to Blu-ray, Greg McCleod's new animated short "365" and confirmation that Miyazaki really is retiring. Listen to the greatness! CLICK HERE to go to the full blog post & leave a comment! Annotations: (12:5...

Episode 16 - Animals Are Dumb

February 21, 2014 03:36 - 1 hour - 70.8 MB

Stephen is traveling this week... but that won't stop us! The podcast continues, with a spit & glue setup only MacGyver could understand. This week we talk about Clone Wars coming to Netflix, Annie Leibovitz making our casting game come true, and Rob finds a tumblr that... well... I'll let him explain it. We also talk about a post that made its rounds this week on what it actually means to be an animator. It was short and blunt and we have words about it. This week, a friend and fellow anima...

Episode 15 - Everything Is LEGO

February 13, 2014 07:23 - 1 hour - 76.4 MB

"The LEGO Movie" blew our collective minds this weekend and we had to talk about it... a LOT! But don't worry there are absolutely NO spoilers at all in the discussion. We get into some interesting topics like metamodernism and the new comedy, selling out and how it's a crap concept, and the remix culture and understanding what the soul of a property is. Oh... and we had a WHOLE BUNCH OF TECHNICAL ISSUES! Man alive... for this being the most discussion we've ever had on any subject(s), this ...

Episode 14 - Joker Don't Play That

February 05, 2014 19:32 - 1 hour - 73.3 MB
