After my own therapist started asking me to question where and how anxiety was showing up in my body physically, it occurred to me that I had never thought about the embodiment of emotion in the body that way before and because fascinated with the topic.
When I started doing more research into somatic therapy, I came across the brilliant Ailey Jolie on Instagram and we had an absolutely game changing conversation, diving deep into a topic that many of us don't pay enough attention to.
Ailey is passionate about embodiment, about supporting others living fully and wholly in their body. This is mirrored in her work as a trauma therapist (MCP), yoga teacher, meditation guide, and internationally published author.
In her clinical therapy practice Jolie works with individuals who have experienced trauma and no longer feel safe in their body. She assists clients in their process of coming home to their body through somatic and mindfulness based psychotherapies. The same approaches that helped her reconnect with her body after sexual violence and exploitation. Presently she is working towards obtaining a second Master of Arts Degree in Depth Psychology with an Emphasis in Somatic Studies.
Ailey has the most beautiful way of breaking down complicated neuroscience in a way that is easy to understand, and we talked a lot about how the body stores emotions and processes traumas, along with how your body communicates to you and to other people. A sneak peek of other parts of our conversation include:
Examining different types of trauma and some surprising events that can be traumatic emotionally and manifest physically Some of the ways we can slow down and tap into the sensory experience of the body The ways our bodies communicate to others and the science behind how we often mirror the behaviour of others How somatic therapy is tied to eating disorders Why your sore joints and posture might be telling you more about yourself than the fact that you work a desk job Taking care with the language we use in our everyday life related to trauma and mental health
If you've ever wanted to better understand your body, emotions and how to work through various types of trauma, this episode is for you. Be sure to pass on the love and share this with some who might need to hear it!
