Most people over the age of 30 will remember where they were and what they were doing when they heard about the death of the "people's princess".
A new generation of royals have taken her place, but many of the tensions between what the monarchy represents and what the public want from it remain.
Social anthropologist Dr Susan Wardell says Princess Diana's death was a cultural flashpoint.
