A medical student scam appears to have been going on for years, if not generations, with several GPs telling RNZ they believe the authorities have been turning a blind eye.
Otago University is punishing more than 50 trainee interns for using their three-month overseas hospital placement to instead go on holiday.
But former students say the culprits are being scapegoated for a long-running and culturally-accepted practice.
