The first of the boot camps promised by the coalition government should be operating by the middle of the year.
The plan is to begin with a pilot boot camp that has both a military-style component and rehabilitation.
Oranga Tamariki will run the programme alongside other agencies and providers.
The Children's minister Karen Chhour, who made the announcement, declined to come on the programme.
Minister of Corrections and Police Mark Mitchell spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
