Even Richard Tacon, chief executive of mining company Bathurst Resources says the coal-fired plant at Huntly should only be used as a last resort. While many argue the world's reliance needs to decline sharply for climate goals to be within reach Tacon says coal for steelmaking will be needed beyond 2050.
