Romans 8:1-9

Paul is a minister of the new law, the new covenant. In Romans 8, the church is reminded that the Mosaic law leads to death. Life lived by the new law of love is only possible by the power of the Holy Spirit. By that power, we are able to choose a life of obedience to God.

We have been set free from the law of sin and death because of what Jesus has done for us. Sin has no authority over those who live by the Spirit of God. Spoiler alert: We already know the outcome of the battle between good and evil.

This radical love that we are called to receive, live in, and emulate mysteriously and miraculously changes us into Christ’s likeness. As we love more like Jesus, we are enabled to resist the temptation of sin. In verse 12, Paul says that we have no obligation to do what our sinful nature urges us to do. We have a choice.

Sin is a choice. That choice is made easier as we grow in Jesus’ love and rely on the Holy Spirit to lead us.
