It had been almost 30 years since the Senate has passed gun safety legislation, until Thursday night, when the U.S. Senate passed the Safer Communities Act. The bill addresses issues like the so-called “boyfriend loophole," creates new requirements for FFLs (federal firearm licensee) designations, a mechanism to ensure that individuals who exhibited signs of dangerousness as minors are appropriately evaluated when seeking to purchase a firearm, and more. While Brady endorses some of the legislation, and has concerns about other aspects of it (you can read more about that here), this bill's passage is a great first step toward a new era of gun violence prevention.

Long time advocates Senator Chris Murphy,  Christian Heyne (Vice President of Policy at Brady) and Martina Leinz (President of the Northern Virginia (NOVA) Brady Chapter), and Brady board member) joined hosts  Kelly and JJ to discuss what it means that the final  bipartisan vote was 65 to 33, why this bill was historic, and what we all must do next to keep fighting for gun violence prevention.
