The Curve

278 episodes - English - Latest episode: about 21 hours ago -

The Curve is a platform to learn more about money. To change the stereotype that these conversations are typically boring, and only for men in suits. Victoria has worked in the finance and investing world for 13 years, and Sophie is a total novice. Learn alongside her as she asks all the questions you're thinking, but might feel a little embarrassed to ask. This podcast will give you all the tools and knowledge to achieve financial freedom, as well as (hopefully) having a laugh along the way.

New episodes every Monday and Wednesday!

TCW65: Entrepreneur, entrepreneur, entrepreneur.

April 28, 2024 18:00 - 29 minutes - 26.7 MB

As Linda Jenkinson (the absolute icon that we interviewed last week) would say; a business' success boils down to three things; entrepreneur, entrepreneur, entrepreneur. And this week we're looking at how Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg continue to kill the game. In other newwwws (sorry Vic), the New York stock exchange might be opening 24/7 and Google have declared their first ever dividend (which is where they return cash to their shareholders). Go on Google! Click here to learn...

RTC112: The first woman to list on the NASDAQ: Linda Jenkinson AKA an icon.

April 23, 2024 17:00 - 45 minutes - 41.7 MB

This is Linda Jenkinson, or otherwise known as LJ, the first woman to ever list a company on the NASDAQ stock exchange in the US. We know what you’re thinking, this must’ve been ages ago right? LJ listed her company in 1998... that’s only 26 years ago! Being constantly dismissed because of her gender, it's safe to say that LJ has encountered a fair few glass ceilings which she's smashed through at full force. She sees life as a set of games where she’s constantly breaking the rules, and she'...

TCW64: Cheap holidays, Hong Kong's in trouble + Vic's big surprise.

April 21, 2024 17:00 - 28 minutes - 25.7 MB

Mixing things up this week, we're talking currencies! Currencies are a bit like stocks; they fluctuate depending on demand, and can actually be a creative way of saving money. Hint: take a holiday to a destination where the currency is weak - you'll be living it up for less!  Testing that theory is Vic who has has decided to fly to Spain to surprise flower man (AKA her boyfriend), meanwhile Soph is on a fly hunt (literally - please excuse any blow fly sounds that enter this recording). Big u...

RTC111: FIRE: Financial Independence Retire Early, with Ana Kresina.

April 16, 2024 17:00 - 49 minutes - 45 MB

If you haven't already heard of the FIRE movement, let us introduce you to this amazing concept. FIRE (otherwise known as 'financial independence retire early') is a pretty extreme approach to saving + investing. Someone who has successfully gotten herself in position where she could retire before her 40th birthday is the amazing Ana Kresina. She is a financial educator, author and ex-roller derby player who although she could retire, is choosing to work and empower women all over the world ...

TCW63: An update on crocs, inflation, and Soph’s love life.

April 14, 2024 17:25 - 27 minutes - 25.4 MB

It’s been another wild week in the stock market, but before we get into that - do you remember those emotional charts therapists use to help decipher how you're feeling? No? Just imagine Vic pointing to overwhelm and Soph at the excitement section with a hard launch we are all here for. And although the stock market's been pointing at depressed lately, there is one company you might consider investing in. It's share price has risen 40% this year alone! A small hint...they make arguably the m...

RTC110: Pay off the mortgage or invest? Part Two

April 09, 2024 16:00 - 37 minutes - 34.2 MB

Although this 2-parter seems somewhat like Sophie's voice messages; a little rambly, and at times totally off-topic, we hope that by the end, you'll come away with a better understanding of what's best for your financial situation: paying off the mortgage early, or investing the extra funds. Investing may make you more money than paying off debt, but the savings from interest on mortgage payments can be significant. This is why it’s important to determine (based on your personal circumstance...

TCW62: GenZ, Millenials or boomers - who needs the most for their 20 year holiday?

April 07, 2024 16:00 - 27 minutes - 24.9 MB

WARNING: To avoid the world's biggest spoiler dropped by Vic at 7:40 about the series 'One Day', skip to 8:30. Following a significant tumble in Tesla's share price, the car giant finds itself ranked as the second-worst performing company among the top 500 listed on the U.S. stock market. Taylor Swift is one of the newest additions to list of global billionaires list! And despite their being more people holding billions than ever before, the rest of us according to Calvin Kleins falling sha...

RTC109: Pay off the mortgage or invest? Part One

April 02, 2024 16:00 - 42 minutes - 39.2 MB

Today we’re discussing one of the grey areas we get asked about a lot; whether to prioritise investments, or paying off the mortgage. And although Soph's spent the past few days skilfully dodging emails and meetings using Vic's mysterious operation as her golden ticket, this week we're back in business. As both mortgage and interest rates seesaw, it can be difficult to know where to put your money and what will be best in the long run. In this episode, we’re discussing ways in which you can ...

TCW61: Reddit’s IPO, Mcdonalds’ new menu item and the cocoa crisis.

March 31, 2024 16:00 - 28 minutes - 25.7 MB

After last week's announcement, we were delighted to receive so many positive messages and words of wisdom but there was one message in particular telling us to cut to the chase so this week, we're getting straight to it (just after Soph shares a moustache story that has no financial relevance). Sorry Nance. Okay, okay, Reddit shares take a turn after the IPO last week (where the company goes public so you can buy shares) as the dreaded short-sellers arrive, McDonald’s makes a sweet deal wi...

RTC108: Our most inspirational story to date.

March 26, 2024 17:00 - 46 minutes - 42.2 MB

Today we welcomed to the studio (otherwise known as Vic's Niece and Nephew's playroom) one of our listeners; Sophia Cich, who told us one of the coolest investing stories we've ever heard. Finding the balance between spending money now for fun vs saving for the future is pretty hard to gauge. How far in the future should you be saving for? How long should you leave your investments for? And can you enjoy any of your investments along the way? Sophia’s story is a great example of how to inves...

TCW60: An investment (very) close to home...

Today is not a normal Curve Weekly, it's more of a quick life + business update! Back to regular programming next Monday! RTC107: Saving for a dopamine hit with Aleks Nikolic.

March 19, 2024 17:37 - 41 minutes - 37.8 MB

This week we’re speaking with the internet’s big sister, Aleks Nikolic - founder of Broke Girl Wealth. As a full-time lawyer and advocate for financial literacy, Aleks offers invaluable insights into financial red flags to look out for in relationships, JOMO, and how a hit of dopamine can be obtained by saving and investing. In this episode, Aleks guides us away from conventional money saving approaches like sponge-cutting (yep, you read correctly) towards a more fulfilling financial future ...

TCW59: Tik, Tok, Boom.

March 17, 2024 17:00 - 28 minutes - 25.7 MB

Soph’s finally back in London, but she’s arrived with some pretty painful baggage (shoutout to Freya, Curve fan / world’s best air hostess on hand with antiseptic and ice). And while one iconic duo is now back together, the relationship between China and the U.S. seems to be deteriorating further. The U.S. are trying to pass a bill that could mean 170 million American users will be banned from using the Chinese platform TikTok... ouch. In other Curve Weekly news, Adidas posts it’s first ever...

RTC106: Investing in jewels, art and all things luxury with Webb’s Auction House.

March 12, 2024 16:00 - 50 minutes - 46.2 MB

We did our first LIVE podcast event in New Zealand, and it was sparkly, chic and extremely luxurious. We had the absolute honour of sitting down with Tasha Jenkins and Christine Power (two brilliant experts from the iconic Webb’s Auction House) to talk about the ins and outs of investing in luxury items. The questions (like the Veuve) were flowing. Where do we start? How long do we keep a piece for? How volatile is the market? Do ethics come into it? Is orange a bad choice? Should we keep th...

TCW58: Crypto’s up, Oprah’s out and Soph’s a little bit tiddly.

March 10, 2024 19:59 - 27 minutes - 25 MB

Crypto is flying high, up 150% in the last six months (and Soph and Vic invested!). To celebrate, Soph’s enjoying a Corona in bed while Vic sips on her lemon water. Bliss. And the good news doesn’t end there. The price of gold is also hitting record highs, parental leave in Australia is getting 12% sweeter, and while Oprah’s reasons for leaving the board may be questionable, it seems that Weight Watchers is getting a taste of its own low-carb, low-fat and highly outdated medicine. Oh, and Vi...

RTC105: Why ‘Girl Math’ needs the boot, with Bronwyn Taylor.

March 05, 2024 17:00 - 42 minutes - 39 MB

‘If I buy something then return it, I’ve basically made money. If I pay in cash, it’s literally free. Anything under $5 doesn’t count.’ If you’ve been on any form of social media lately, you’ve no doubt witnessed the fast-growing (and for many people, quite funny) trend, ‘Girl Math’. In today’s episode, we sit down with Bronwyn Taylor, a delightful and highly intelligent economist, to talk about gender stereotyping, ingrained sexism and the deep-rooted problems that come with labelling girls...

TCW57: Get over yourself, Wendy.

March 03, 2024 20:07 - 29 minutes - 26.7 MB

This week, Vic’s flying out, Soph’s dancing like Derulo and Wendy’s thrown a big cheesy spanner in the works. We look at the burger surge, the backlash and if the fast-food icon is being wildly arrogant or weirdly clever. And with so many big names selling stocks and hoarding cash (we’re looking at you Buffett, Bezos and Zuckerberg), there’s an air of uncertainty rippling through the finance world – so should we be fearful and careful, or is it time to get greedy? Plus, we’ve got hot tips, e...

RTC104: Money stories, Hinge dates and neuro-divergence with Victoria Devine.

February 28, 2024 01:27 - 47 minutes - 43.7 MB

After co-existing in the financial-podcast-world for so long, we are beyond excited to be sitting down with Victoria Devine – creator and host of Australia’s ‘She’s on the Money’ podcast, author of three life-changing books and all-round inspirational powerhouse. From personal debt to neuro-divergence, Hinge dates to family tax (more fun than it sounds) and trying to hold off labour until after Taylor Swift, Victoria is a wealth of warm, funny wisdom – and she’s only too happy to share it wi...

TCW56: Hey Taylor, keen to fix our recession?

February 25, 2024 19:52 - 26 minutes - 24.1 MB

After a wholesome old weekend, filled with nudity, ice baths and open-fire cooking, we’re back in the real world and ready to get stuck into some finance. While Goldman Sachs is dealing with some women-in-power issues (shock horror), Taylor Swift is proving that females can do anything … like bring entire countries out of recession. And while Bitcoin’s embarking on a halving event, Japan’s stock market has been doubling (and doubling again). Oh, and we’re on YouTube! Tune in to see Soph’s dr...

RTC103: A trip down memory lane (with the oldest, baldest, kindest guests we’ve ever had).

February 20, 2024 17:00 - 47 minutes - 43.5 MB

We love each and every one of our guests, but today’s duo is on another level. A bit old, a bit bald and endlessly kind … today, we’re lucky enough to be talking to Mike Hallwright (of the cereal noises) and Ian Harris (of the 40-year moustache). Aka, our dads. Although neither wants to be here, Mike and Ian really come to the party – spilling on the tea on our money-personalities growing up. Who stole from their family to buy McDonalds? Who racked up $18,000 of credit card debt? Who sold ba...

TCW55: Green flags for Uber, red flags for Amazon, and no more flowers for Vic.

February 18, 2024 19:08 - 18 minutes - 17.2 MB

As we race through this speedy little episode, the race is also on for a couple of transportation big dogs. With Uber finally in the green and Lyft firmly in the red (with red faces all round), it seems we have a clear-cut winner … for now. And while Jeff Bezos is getting even richer and Vic’s flower supply has been shockingly cut off, Maggie Marilyn is keeping it chic: out there, on the streets of London, quite literally saving lives. This one’s for you, Meg! Watch the episode on YouTube. ...

RTC102: Why talking money with your partner is vital (and a little bit sexy), with Nicole Haddow.

February 13, 2024 17:00 - 35 minutes - 32.4 MB

When you think about getting intimate with your partner, you’re probably not imagining a practical chat about the household finances. But … maybe you should be. Today’s guest, the incredible author, heritage homeowner and all-round great person Nicole Haddow, is here to discuss ‘Couple Goals’ (the name of her latest book, and the general theme of this episode) – and, more specifically, how talking money with your partner is not only vital for the success of your relationship, but is also a l...

TCW54: Is Disney in a naughty little three-way?

February 11, 2024 20:37 - 25 minutes - 23.5 MB

Today, we’re coming to you live (not actually live) from Vic’s sister’s house (feat. an adorable dog) and Soph’s family kitchen (feat. Michael Hallwright’s cereal noises). You’re welcome! For today’s accidental American-themed episode, we’re talking family-favourite Disney and its latest three-way scandal, Facebook’s big birthday and even bigger Wall Street moves, WeWork’s possible return to relevance and Superbowl Sunday’s out of this WORLD ticket prices. Watch this episode on YouTube. Fo...

RTC101: How to talk about your salary (without making it weird), with Julia Glum.

February 07, 2024 05:29 - 41 minutes - 37.7 MB

Good dates, horrible dates, family drama, weird rashes … for most of us, this kind of personal info will be talked about with a friend (or the entire girls’ WhatsApp chat). So why is it so awkward to talk to each other about our finances? In today’s episode, we’re talking to Julia Glum, a personal finance journalist whose funny, relatable and incredibly honest writing is helping to bring the salary-chat out of the shadows. From when, where and how to broach the topic (spoiler: not at a festi...

TCW53: BREAKING NEWS! Vic has a joint account (and it’s not with Soph)

February 04, 2024 00:00 - 23 minutes - 21.3 MB

It’s baaaaaack! Reporting season is here, which means we’re peeking through the curtains of some seriously powerful companies. We talk about who’s soaring, who’s stalling and who’s nosediving from the sky (with parts falling off as they go). We also look at the people-friendly reason behind Walmart’s latest stock split, jumping on the bandwagon of AI investing, the perils of adult acne and our own personal ‘loud budgets’. Who’s cutting Uber Eats? Who’s ditching takeaway coffees? Who forgot a...

January 29, 2024 00:06 - 24 minutes - 22.7 MB

We all know that size doesn’t (or shouldn’t) matter – but when it comes to Stanley, the world is suddenly going wild for his big old jumbo cups. We talk about incredible rebrands, the perks of going viral, and whether a surge in demand equals a solid investment opportunity. We also look at China’s downward spiral, the power of the Magnificent Seven (the seven biggest companies in the world) and the joys of being loudly and proudly frugal. Plus, Vic has never looked hotter and Soph is suddenl...

RTC99: Self-sabotage, people pleasing and setting boundaries with Dr Rebecca Ray.

January 23, 2024 23:47 - 42 minutes - 39.2 MB

WHY ARE BOUNDARIES SO HARD? Why is it so awkward to say we can’t afford something? Why do we carry so much guilt and fear and shame around saying, ‘No, actually, that won’t work for me’? In today’s episode, we are lucky enough to ask these questions (and many, many more) to the international queen of boundaries, Rebecca Ray. As a clinical psychologist, renowned speaker and author of two incredible books, Dr Becks is an absolute weapon when it comes to then when, how and why of putting our ow...

TCW51: All hail Sir Lord King Warren Buffett!

January 22, 2024 02:52 - 25 minutes - 23.5 MB

As the NZ summer’s getting hotter and hotter (Soph’s sweating, Vic’s doused in perfume) Google’s going ice-cold, announcing even more employee cuts to come this year. We look at the reason behind the layoffs and how this could have a positive effect on inflation (although we really don’t want you to be fired). And while Google has too many people, China’s facing the opposite problem. While a rapidly shrinking population may sound like a good thing (hello, happier environment) it could also c...

She also happens to be Vic’s sister’s husband’s brother’s partner (it’s closer than it sounds, we promise). She’s pitched to hundreds of potential investors to raise more than $3.5million, navigated the US banking collapse, the cost of living in New York, all while working insanely hard with the aim to earn as much money as human...

January 15, 2024 03:30 - 34 minutes - 31.8 MB

Soph went to a silent retreat and got hit by a flying log, Vic went on a sexy hike and got a nasty bee sting, and Boeing sent a plane across the skies … and lost part of it mid-flight. We talk about the effect this could have on their share price, investor confidence and their reputation as a whole. We also look at a recent billion-dollar dating app investment, the latest way to buy Bitcoin, and El...

January 09, 2024 20:21 - 44 minutes - 40.8 MB

In today’s episode, we’re talking to the incredible Liz Gillette – a bad-ass financial advisor who, in her teenage and young adult years, experienced more than her fair share of money troubles. From the risks of facial recognition to carbon neutral data centres, increased productivity to who’s responsible for the recycling, we dive deep into the...

Today, we’re talking big risks, big bets and the danger of betting on failure. On a more positive note, the S&P500 is up, Uber’s finally in the big-dog club, Facebook is flying, Zuckerberg’s selling, TikTok is absolutely massive and Vic’s ...

AI scandals, dirty crypto and weeping at Singapore Airport … safe to say, it’s been a wild old week for all involved. While Vic finally touched down on safe ground (yes, the weeping was hers) the same can’t be said for the big dogs behind ChatGPT, who are currently dealing with a veeery shaky landing. We talk about riding the AI wave, the inevitability of greed following success, and the beauty of investing in an ETF. We also look at dodgy money (and founders) in the world of crypto and the ...
