Our parish church is also a shrine of Saint Jude the Apostle. We welcome all those who seek a place of peace and prayer in our church, as well as those who come seeking the intercession of the Holy Apostle, who has the reputation of being the patron saint of difficult cases. This in no way detracts from the unique and all-sufficient mediation of Christ any more than if I were to ask a friend of mine to pray for me. We find even in the early Church evidence of Christians asking the prayers of the martyrs. This homily was preached on Sunday, October 30, 2011, the festival day of Saint Jude, which we have permission to celebrate on the last Sunday of October. Given the honour shown to Saint Jude by the veneration of his relic in our church, it was an opportune time to speak about the veneration of relics and the bodies of the saints.
