The reading from Luke is the story of Mary and Martha, as Mary sits at the feet of the teachers and Martha tries to provide hospitality. Both are important aspects of discipleship (remember the Good Samaritan from last week?), so don't try to pit Mary and Martha against each other. Jesus condemns neither, but exalts Mary for infiltrating a man's world. The letter to the Colossians contains a word of peace and grace to an anxious people. It is not about condemning the Colossians for their apostasy, but encouraging them in their anxiety.
