Matthew Series 1
In this message, we begin a series on the gospel of Matthew. We discuss the fact that this book of Matthew is the book of being “in Israel.” Like John, it sets out to prove that Jesus is the Messiah. It presents Jesus as King of Israel, primarily to Jews. Many have tried to claim there was an original, Hebrew “Matthew,” but we believe the ancient evidence for this is slim and the gospel, like the rest of the New Testament, was written originally in Greek. Matthew was a former tax collector for the Romans, and then became part of the twelve. He tells us next to nothing about himself, focusing on presenting Christ as the ultimate King. We consider the Lord’s genealogy as presented in Matthew, finding it more a pedigree connecting Him to the nation of Israel throughout its history.
