In this message, Paul discusses that his needing to defend his doctrine to the pillars in Jerusalem was due to certain false brothers who came into the group at Syrian Antioch to spy out their liberty in Christ. They did not submit to these for a moment. Those of reputation in Jerusalem added nothing to Paul’s message, but realized he was to go to the uncircumcision and they to the circumcision, so they agreed to them about this. They wanted Paul to keep remembering the poor, which he planned on doing. When Peter came to Antioch, however, Paul withstood him to the face, since he started out sharing meals with the Gentile believers, but when certain from James came, he was afraid and separated from them. Paul called him out in front of them all for his hypocrisy.
