FLANNELGRAPH FOUNDATIONS Week 5: “Won’t You Be a Neighbor” Luke 10:25-37

One day an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher - what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus answered: “You’re the expert in the Law...how do you interpret what it says?” And the expert in the law said, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. And you must love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus said: “Cool. Then go do that and you’ll live.” But the man, wanting to find some kind of loophole, asked: “Yes, Teacher. But who is supposed to be that neighbor that I love? Who am I required to show compassion to in order to live eternally?”

Then Jesus told him this story of the Good Samaritan.  You’ve heard the story...but really, in light of the purpose for Jesus telling it, it might very well be called The Poopoo-Head Priest or the Loathesome Levite! People KNOW this story, but many don’t know WHY Jesus told it, nor are they aware of its context.
