Mark 9 captures a story of a man who had a son possessed by a demon.. When the boy was brought to Jesus the spirit threw him to the ground and he began foaming at the mouth. And the father says to Jesus: (Mark 9:23-24) “If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us! And Jesus said to him, ‘If You can? All things are possible to him who believes.’ Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, ‘I do believe; help my unbelief.”

What a statement. An acknowledgement, really, of the essence of a journey of faith. A faith that is very much there - after all the father went to Jesus’ disciples to cast out the demon - but also at times seems to be lacking.

Faith is really something we grow in; it’s part of our journey. Abraham was a man of faith. In Isaiah, God calls Abraham his “friend.” Can you imagine God singling YOU out and calling you His friend? Abraham is known as the FATHER of faith. We are told in Scripture that Abraham believed God’s promises that Brian preached about last week - and that because of his belief in the faithfulness of God to fulfill His promises, God counted Abraham as RIGHTEOUS.

So we shouldn’t be surprised to find times in Abraham’s life where that faith stood out - times where his trust in God was obvious. But it may surprise you to see there were times in Abraham’s life where he could easily have said as the father says to Jesus there in Mark 9 - I DO believe…but I need help with those times where my faith isn’t as strong. in other words, help my unbelief.
