Pop Culture Radio Show

9 episodes - English - Latest episode: about 9 years ago -

The Pop Culture Radio show goes out live on Kilburn to Kensall Radio (www.k2kradio.com) on the first wednesday of the month at 8pm.

With the help of a special guest we explore the murky underbelly and the oft-neglected shiny over-belly of popular culture.

One month it might be the Bechtel test, the next it could be Roger Moore's fruity-face. High-art, low-brow we love it all.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

October 30, 2014 00:00 - 56 minutes - 51.5 MB

Francesca Peschier returns for a bonus Halloween-Special podcast. What better subject for Halloween than the TV show that turned horror tropes inside out (like some sort of serial killer that hunts down tropes because a couple of tropes killed it's parents 20 years to the day...) Buffy the Vampire Slayer. We glance over the history, the politics and the ill-advised solo albums of one of the most seminal TV shows of the most awkward period in pop culture: the late-nineties/early-no...

Great British Bake Off

October 02, 2014 00:00 - 59 minutes - 82.2 MB

The Great British Bake Off – a quintessentially British hotbed of pageantry, pastry and infectious enthusiasm. Francesca Peschier and Miranda Garrett joined us to watch the Quarter Finals (Dough week!) and unpick the fine filo layers of culture and examine the sweet academic fondant beneath. Or at least that was the plan and then we had a bunch of cheese and wine in preparation and it all went rapidly downhill…..

This month we are joined by bluesman and motorcycle enthusiast Anton Shelupanov to talk about Sons of Anarchy which started it's seventh and final series this week. We also have a wide ranging discussion of bikes in pop culture from Easy Rider to Grease 2 via Hunter S Thompson. The Pop Culture Radio Show is presented by Nigel Doylerush (and is normally Produced by Sarah Corke but because I did it this month there are a load of mic issues in the first half - sorry about that). It ...

Andy Hobbs (Theatre director, mastermind behind Guerilla Shakespeare and presenter of the Facsimile Arts Radio Show.) joins us to chat about his favourite corner of cinema: the creature-feature. We chart the evolution of this cinematic form from Godzilla in the 1960s right up to the modern heights of Sharknado 2 and offer some unsolicited advice to Edgar Wright (because of course he's listening) in his first foray into the creature-feature: Grasshopper Jungle. The Pop Culture Radi...

Dolly Parton: Feminist Icon

July 03, 2014 12:00 - 42 minutes - 58.6 MB

Pop Culture Radio Show ep12 In a week where Dolly Parton fairly decidedly won Glastonbury - bringing more people to the Pyramid stage in the 5pm slot than any of the headliners could manage - Francesca Peschier (Academic and editor of the JAWS Journal of Arts Writing by Students) talks to us about Dolly and the many colourful, strong women that sang Country. The Pop Culture Radio Show is presented by Nigel Doylerush and produced by Sarah Corke. It goes out live (with all the music ...

Vinyl and the Death of the Physical Format

June 04, 2014 21:00 - 2 minutes - 61.6 MB

Pop Culture Radio Show ep11 This month we're talking about physical media. Is there any space left in our hearts and on our shelves for physical versions of albums, films, TV and books when it's all available to stream or download? Vinyl seems to be the one outlier that is holding on to it's sales figures and one man who is just about to add to those is James from progressive metal outfit: Miroist. He joins us to chat about the future of they physical format and the ones that man...
