Lydia Tate, whose pseudonym is Lily Jane, is an educator, voice actor, and audiobook narrator. Her style is spontaneous, straightforward, and savvy...like having coffee with your quirky BFF. She has loved performing since she was a kid.  As an adult, she uses her Middle School Science Education degree both in the classroom and as a curriculum designer. And now, she pairs her education experience with her professional training in nonfiction narration to record engaging, informative voiceover. She also loves to record some fun cozy mysteries now and then. When Lydia is not narrating, you can find her making crafts, baking homemade bread, playing disc golf, or consuming coffee drinks full of chocolate or caramel.

Highlights from the interview and insights from Lydia

Lydia is one of my audiobook accountability partners.  Accomplishing goals is easier to do when someone holds you accountable.  Lydia holds me accountable for doing things I say I’m going to do, and I hold her accountable in return.

Investing in performance training and equipment, and setting up a professional recording environment is important.

Lydia has a background in theater, speech and debate, teaching middle school science, creating middle school science curriculum, and being a voice actor and an audiobook narrator.  A unique mix!

Sean Pratt has an organized, nonfiction audiobook narration curriculum.

Lydia got into audiobooks when she discovered ACX (Audiobook Creation Exchange)

Investing time and money into a new career can create doubt. Having doubts is normal. Moving forward in spite of doubt is a necessity for second-career professionals.

The Indie (ACX And Others) Audiobook Narrators and Producers [Private] Facebook Group is a great resource for audiobook narrators. Group members provide insights on a variety of topics, like performance, equipment, relationships with rights holders, and best practices. Moderators for the group and group members are talented and generous with information.

At 34 weeks pregnant during this interview, Lydia is ready for a break from narrating. Fortunately, jumping back into narrating audiobooks is an option in the future.

Lydia encourages second-career individuals or those considering a job change to try something different. Go for it!  You never know where it will take you.
