Matt Swope has had an interesting journey to become the hitting coach at the University of Maryland. Most baseball coaches have the typical road of starting out as a player and then immediately becoming a coach.
However, Matt actually left the game and worked for a construction firm as a project manager and then worked for the department of defense. During this whole time he still loved baseball and still stayed involved in the game giving lessons and watching games regularly.
Matt decided to get back into baseball and had to move and take a big pay cut. He started out as the Director of Baseball operations at the University of Maryland in 2012. He viewed this time as a blessing because he really learned how an entire program operated and believes it prepared him to become a full time coach when he got that opportunity in 2017.
