#246: HALT - The Premise for Self-Care

In this "Monday mindset'' episode, I am sharing the acronym HALT, from comedian Whitney Cummings.  This acronym came into my world three times in a matter of days so I decided to understand it better and share it with you on this podcast.  Self-care is about filling our own cup up first before we can give to others. This acronym really simplifies the process.  Self-care is about giving the world what is the best of you and not what is left of you.

In today’s episode we discuss:
1) HALT stands for Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired.  To handle situations better, if you are feeling any of these emotions, it is necessary to handle these emotions first before trying to serve or take care of anyone else, because doing so will only lead to frustration.  This is exceptionally true if you are dealing with a conflict or a difficult experience.

2) If you continually feel yourself falling back into these patterns, there could be some underlying codependency or people pleasing patterns to address.

3) Looking at this acronym, it shows that these are the 4 basic human needs and if we can’t give these to ourselves first, we ultimately have nothing left to give to others.

4) Puting the necessary boundaries in place, self-care practices,  and recognizing the traps you fall into and remember to practice grace and compassion.  Self-care and boundaries are the signs of ultimate self-respect. This takes time to implement and master.
