Jane Friedman, the former publisher of Writer’s Digest, has been teaching writers about the business of publishing for more than 15 years. Jane talks to Shannon about her book, Publishing 101, which offers sound, step-by-step advice about preparing queries and proposals, as well as approaching editors and agents with your work while avoiding the common pitfalls of first-time authorship.


Jane currently teaches digital publishing at the University of Virginia and is a professor of Great Courses. Since 2001, Jane has spoken at more than 200 events worldwide, including BookExpo America, SXSW, the Association of Writers & Writing Programs, and numerous creative writing programs. She has also served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts and the Creative Work Fund in San Francisco. Her blog for writers enjoys 150,000 unique visitors every month.
