Just when you thought things couldn't get any more bizarre, another seasoned property developer, investing in the heart of Portland for the last four decades, has finally given up. After grappling with an unprecedented string of property violations, from the so-called homeless habitually breaking into his properties to a sluggish bureaucracy seemingly deaf to his pleas for help, the real estate veteran has decided it's game over.
In an incident that would be hilarious if it weren't so tragic, one particular property, once a thriving pizza parlor, was overrun by the city's homeless. They made their domicile in, around, and even in the dumpster enclosure – their lodgings until a fiery finale. When our exasperated developer sought assistance from the police, he was directed towards Central City Concern. But rather than resolving the situation, they merely offered the intruders coffee and hot soup. Evidently, Portland’s response to the crisis is somewhat less than reassuring.
Yet, it's not this one property that's driven the developer to his wits' end. The owner of 70 properties, he's seen it all. His love for the city's greenery, lifestyle, and people kept him anchored, but this was the last straw. It's a bittersweet end, not just for him but for every taxpayer footing the bill for Portland's rampant inefficiencies and failed policies.
