What Would I Do If I Wasn’t a Teacher?

How do teachers know when it is time to walk away from teaching? As education changes and teachers are asked to do more with less, educators can find themselves questing the very profession in which they have dedicated their lives. It can be a tough decision whether to stay or to go.

I know when I began to feel the desperate need to walk away from teaching, I was heartbroken. In fact, it took years of grieving to make the final decision finally. Then I grieved some more.

I do believe once a teacher always a teacher. It’s in our bones. Sometimes we need to reshape our contribution to education. What makes me very upset is knowing that teachers often feel trapped in the classroom. There are so many other things teachers can do with the skills they have acquired teaching. It just takes a little outside the box, thinking.

I also think it is essential for teachers to stay right where they are if they still have the same fire and passion towards the profession. We need good teachers in the classroom.

This episode is a little heavy. I apologize in advance. But if you have ever doubted your decision to teach, this is the episode for you. Be sure to let me know what you think of this episode. I would love to hear from you. Sometimes we all just need to know we aren’t alone.
