169 episodes - English - Latest episode: about 3 years ago - ★★★★★ - 73 ratings

There are SO many issues in healthcare that impact medical/nursing providers and patients alike, but each of them may not see the connections to themselves. This show will be a forum for nurses to tell stories about their own experiences, whether professional or family-focused and guests will inspire conversation on health and nursing-related topics. Issues will vary from communication in healthcare to current issues, such as nurse/patient ratios, dealing with conflict, how to create cooperative workplaces, speed-reading people, as nursing strikes and much more. Government policies are creating a major shift for all healthcare providers as well as their patients. We, as nurses, will be creating the future healthcare paradigms as we move forward, becoming a crucial part of the solutions. “Once a Nurse, Always a Nurse: Exploring the World of Nursing” is broadcast live every Monday at 10 AM Pacific Time on the VoiceAmerica’s Health and Wellness Channel.

Healing the Moral Wounds of the Pandemic

March 22, 2021 07:00 - 55 minutes - 4.51 MB

The CVOID-19 pandemic has left physical, psychological and moral wounds for nurses who have sacrificed so much to provide care to patients and their families. Some healthcare workers describe symptoms similar to PTSD: having panic attacks, difficulty sleeping, unable to eat or eating too much, exhaustion, tearful, and reliving the tragedies they have witnessed. There is a name for this, which also brings the good news that it can be relieved. My guest in this important episode is Dr. Cynda H...

March 15, 2021 07:00 - 54 minutes - 4.51 MB

I hear from nurses/HC workers daily. I hear the incredible things you do to help patients & families under your care in COVID & Non-COVID units; there are stories of love for co-workers, exhaustion, rage; efforts to lighten the load of each other & mind-numbing, heart-aching memories. I hear your doubts about yourself & your abilities under these unrelenting experiences. Who wouldn’t? Do you just want to rest your mind & hearts—to feel LOVE and see LIGHT ahead of you? It has been my dream for...

Revisioning The Image of Nursing

February 22, 2021 08:00 - 55 minutes - 4.51 MB

Post COVID, Nurses must recreate ourselves! We have more, or less, accepted the roles others and Media have portrayed us as. We are FAR more than that! In this Episode, we will share a DYNAMIC conversation on necessary changes nurses must make for our future reinvention. Let us look at Nurses’ current image. The Power of Words in a Mentally Healthy Workplace Culture

February 15, 2021 08:00 - 55 minutes - 4.51 MB

One of the MOST difficult and most HEALING things a human being can do is to speak about their own “secrets.” Have we ALL grown up believing that we are the only ones who have them and that revealing these truths will destroy us? Just about everyone I know would answer “Yes” to that question. The irony is that it is those who do tell the truth and then seek help, healing and a “maskless” life going forward, are truly the ones released from those demon secrets. My Guest, Kim LaMontagne, has no...

How and Why 4.6 Million Nurses Can Heal America

February 08, 2021 08:00 - 56 minutes - 4.51 MB

Much has been written over the past 30 years about Nurses Eating their Young. It has been debated up, down and sideways. My guest, Kathleen Bartholomew, MN, RN decided to do something to stop it. She and two colleagues, Dr. Martha Griffin and Arna Robins, wrote a book called, “The Dauntless Nurse: Communication Confidence Builder.” The book is a NO nonsense look at the reality of sometimes severe Nurse-to-Nurse Hostility. It Exists! It is Devastating to nurses and healthy care of patients! It...

Encore Transforming Healthcare: Nurses Required

January 25, 2021 08:00 - 54 minutes - 4.51 MB

Our Healthcare system is broken. In fact, we do not have healthcare in this country—we have disease care. We wait until you get sick and then try to fix you, easily the most inefficient and expensive form of “healthcare” in the world. Yet, we CAN truly transform healthcare. Each of us will interact with our healthcare system, whether for our families or ourselves. Let’s conscientiously create a system, based on science, research and experience, that we can each be proud of and that we would f...

Let it Flow: How Fundamental Courage and Character Prevails

January 18, 2021 08:00 - 55 minutes - 4.51 MB

This is Brian Mohika’s 2nd episode on Once a Nurse. He first appeared on December 30, 2019 to talk about his persistent and committed work as an entrepreneur to invent, sew, market and gain a small foothold in medical equipment with his Cathwear underwear for men and women who wear Foleys, Suprapubic, Biliary, and Nephrostomy catheters. As he watched the stress, embarrassment & frustration of individuals, who must wear leg catheters continuously, he designed CathWear to allow safe, clean, su...

Nurses Hold The Key to An Empowered Workforce

January 11, 2021 08:00 - 56 minutes - 4.51 MB

Nurses are the bedrock of healthcare around the world. Without Nurses there is NO Healthcare (HC). Nurses are are mandated to prevent injury & disease/ advocate for the patient. They want to focus on community-based education to prevent stress-related diseases. My guest, Glennae Davis, BSN...

Nurses’ Personal Finances 2021: What you need to know!

January 04, 2021 08:00 - 50 minutes - 4.51 MB

2021 is a NEW Year and New Economic landscape. Nurses have been hit hard in some Countries, States & Counties and others have been working overtime without days off. My own experience was I knew next to nothing about managing my finances except: “Save as much as you can!” I put it in a bank savings account for years. Then I discovered Universal Life Insurance & was able to borrow from it to finance 4 houses & 6 cars. Next was stocks, bonds and more. My Guest, Dan Dorval is President and CEO o...

December 28, 2020 08:00 - 54 minutes - 4.51 MB

“I Can Never Unsee, What I Have Seen.”

My guest, Darlene Nelson, RN, founder of Expert Nurse Consultants, joined me on this show on April 13th along with Dr. Juan Nieto, ED physician. The description I gave then, STILL fits. “In the COVID-19 Pandemic in the USA, there are two fights going on. One against a virulent & dangerous new coronavirus & the other on behalf of the safety & protection of ‘essential’ workers across the country. ”The disease is doing an exceptional job at its mission: to infect & kill as many hosts as possible...

What Nurses Wish the Public Knew!

December 07, 2020 08:00 - 54 minutes - 4.51 MB

What has become abundantly apparent in 2020 is just how little the lay public know about hospitals & how they function, nurses & what they do and why there are no hospital beds anywhere in the country right now. What is amazing also is hearing healthcare professionals making comments not supported by science at all, like COVID 19 cannot be spread by people without symptoms. My guest Mary Turner, RN, President of the MN Nurses Association, was asked to speak to President Biden-elect with 3 oth...

My guests for this Episode, Rosanne Raso & Linda Valentino, two of many CNO’s of NYC’s Hospitals, who met the first major onslaught of COVID-19 on the East Coast. We’ve heard a LOT about the incredible efforts of frontline nurses, doctors & essential personnel, but VERY little about the HEROS behind the scenes. A Nurse-Eye View of CBD

November 09, 2020 08:00 - 55 minutes - 4.51 MB

Marijuana for medical use has faced more than 80 years of ridicule, unscientific, unregulated, mishandling of the drug and decades of misinformation, myths and unethical management. Boomers have advocated for the legalization of the drug since the 50’s and 60’s, but it has only been since California, Colorado and a handful of other states did legalized medical marijuana, that it is being taken seriously to help with a wide variety of chronic and intractable health issues. My guests, Patty Gil...

OutGROW the Bully

October 19, 2020 07:00 - 56 minutes - 4.51 MB

This is a topic deeply personal and simultaneously National (not to mention International). Communication is something we all do from prenatal to our last breaths on this earth. Conflict is a given. If we are alive, we absolutely will face conflict. As near as I can tell, there have ALWAYS been bullies. Why is it that we simply don’t seem to get better at communicating with these people in bullying situations? That is SUCH a good question, I decided to ask an expert on the subject: Judith Car...

Fill Up Your Cup, Nurses!

October 12, 2020 07:00 - 55 minutes - 4.51 MB

There just cannot be too many ways to describe self-care for nurses, since we tend to be so bad at doing self-care. I have had Education and Coaching experts, guru’s of meditation, breath work, nurses of all types, ages and backgrounds on the show to discuss this. What I have been wanting to do is talk to relatively new nurses and dig into what works to welcome them into the career and profession of nursing; what helps when they recognize burnout brewing in their souls; and what makes them wa...

Nurses Self-Advocate: Job Burnout to Professional Empowerment

October 05, 2020 07:00 - 54 minutes - 4.51 MB

Every day there are new stories of heroism about nurses—across the Country and around the World. Just NOT from Nurses. Media and the general population, now and in the past, really do NOT have a CLUE what nurses do. Is it because nurses are too busy, tired, burned out and in moral distress to tell their own incredible stories? Although healthcare and nursing are in the news thanks to COVID-19, when was the last time the expert being interviewed was a NURSE? My guest is James Kerridge, Direct...

Encore: TOXIC Leadership: Hospital Change is Needed NOW!

September 21, 2020 07:00 - 55 minutes - 4.51 MB

One of the outcomes of the World Pandemic of COVID-19 is uncovering of all the cracks and deficits in our Public Health and Healthcare Systems in the USA that have been happening over many years. It is open to all eyes at this point that there is NO equity in our healthcare. The poor, black, brown, indigenous and immigrants receive the worst or NO care in our system. The wealthy receive much better care, but still when we look at the statistics of care in the United States compared to other...

Everyday Courage for Extraordinary Times

September 14, 2020 07:00 - 55 minutes - 4.51 MB

Fear is a reaction, courage is a decision. These 8 powerful words are from my Guest, Joe Tye’s, new class, “Everyday Courage for Extraordinary Times.” Everything in our life--our successes, joys, mediocrity, losses, & failures can be traced back to decisions we have made along the way at critical moments. We are currently in a time of GREAT historic significance. The decisions EACH of us make (whether we SEE ourselves as people of power, or not important at all), WILL impact not only OUR futu...

What We DON’T Know About Disinfectants, Can KILL Us!

August 31, 2020 07:00 - 54 minutes - 4.51 MB

This week I had the opportunity to observe an EMT deliver a patient to the hospital room next to my mother’s room. When they brought the stretcher out they cleaned it right in front of me. Using a spray bottle and paper towels, they rapidly wiped over surfaces, missing large areas of the cart and equipment attached to the cart. It occurred to me that this act of “disinfecting” for COVID-19 is happening ALL over the Country and the world. Why is that a problem? My guest is Scott Smith, CEO of ...

Nurses are Drowning! What Can They Use Right Now?

August 17, 2020 07:00 - 55 minutes - 4.51 MB

Nurses across the country are drowning from the overwhelm of COVID-19 patients, lack of PPE, lack of support from some of their hospitals/administrations/Federal/State/Local governments. They are even drowning from the waves of people wishing them well & calling them (S)Heros. They don’t feel like (S)Heros. They feel like they are striving to save patients, they have not even had time to meet before they die—1-4 per shift. They are used to seeing FAR more success than LOSS. They are drowning ...

July 27, 2020 07:00 - 56 minutes - 4.51 MB

I was thrilled to learn about the DAISY Foundation, a remarkable organization that exclusively honors nurses for the incredible efforts they make daily. Bonnie & Mark Barnes wanted to keep the memory of Patrick Barnes alive in a unique way by awarding his nurses (and eventually nurses around the world) with a tangible, heartfelt recognition by their peers/patients. Bonnie & Mark just launched a book to tell the 20-year story: “Shining the Light On All the Right.” So many people now jump on th...

CNO's With a Heart

June 15, 2020 07:00 - 55 minutes - 4.51 MB

COVID-19 has uncovered horrendous deficiencies in many healthcare organizations in the USA. Among the MOST concerning, has been the blatant disrespect for nurses & other HC workers as they risk their lives caring for terminally ill patients, while being refused basic PPE & staffing support. Then they are threatened with loss of their jobs if they follow basic nursing policies. I knew this could NOT be the case everywhere in the country. In searching for CNO’s who put their nursing staff first...

Lisa Romano, CNO of Cipherhealth, my guest for May 18, 2020 and I met in the Fall of 2019, long before anyone was even thinking or a novel coronavirus. She had been working with Hospitals for years to create streamlined IT processes in rooming, moving/discharging, cleaning, and re-rooming patients. Little did she know, ha...

Somatic Functional Therapy (SFT): The Best Stress and Pain Treatment, You’ve Never Heard of!

May 11, 2020 07:00 - 54 minutes - 4.51 MB

Pain and stress relief programs have probably been around since nearly the beginning of time. However the problems still plague most people around the world. The COVID-19 Crisis has only added to the stress and then pain that people are experiencing. I am one of those individuals, dealing with pain almost as long as I can remember. So, while attending a health conference in January, where my guests, today, were demonstrating the effects of Somatic Functional Therapy (SFT), I was the first to ...

Nursing Leadership: Back to the Future

May 04, 2020 07:00 - 57 minutes - 4.51 MB

Margaret Erickson, a nationally celebrated nurse leader with future plans of what Nursing Leadership will become as it creates a MAJOR paradigm shift from the medical model of illness & disease, to the nursing model of health, wellness, & wellbeing/wellbecoming. To a lay person, this may not sound different, but in healthcare it is NIGHT and DAY different. With the Medical model (while doctors want to help their patients to be healthy), their focus is on diagnosis & treatment, once someone I...

COVID-19: HC Crisis Management Done Right

April 20, 2020 07:00 - 55 minutes - 4.51 MB

We have seen disastrous displays of pandemic mismanagement this year. There are many examples of managing crisis in an exemplary way with incredible teamwork & camaraderie by the healthcare (s)heroes of the coronavirus epidemic. GOOD leadership does NOT start when the crisis hits us in the face. It starts years ahead by building a 2-way culture of good relationships, honesty & trust between admin. & staff. Culture is shaped by the collective attitudes & behaviors of the people who work there....

COVID-19: Insights from Healthcare Workers

April 13, 2020 07:00 - 54 minutes - 4.51 MB

In the COVID-19 Pandemic in the USA there are two fights going on. One against a virulent and dangerous new coronavirus and the other on behalf of the safety and protection of “essential” workers across the country. The disease is doing an exceptional job at its mission: to infect and kill as many hosts as possible. The cities, states, hospital administrations and political leaders are, to a large extent, failing miserably at their mission: To protect each and every doctor, nurse, hospital em...
