Dark moods, stress, PTSD, anxiety, and trauma almost resulted in former Royal Marine Sam Murray taking his own life.

It can be difficult to comprehend the levels of stress that Royal Marine Commandos must experience during and after their years of service. After hitting rock bottom, Sam embarked upon a difficult journey of self-awakening and personal development after discovering cold water and breathwork to be a life-changing combination.

Inspired to help others overcome similar challenges, Sam has since co-founded the Breath Connection with his partner Miranda Bailey, a Nutritional Therapist and Breathwork Practitioner, as they now help others to "unlock the power of the breath to build resilience and reduce their stress.

In this episode of the On a Mission podcast, Sam and Miranda discuss how their definition of success has evolved as they have evolved and share practical antidotes to rebalance a stressed mind and body.

Could cold water immersion and breathwork be the key to unlocking the potential we all have within us?

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Most trauma has the devastating effect it does, because it triggers a memory or feeling from childhood that has yet to be addressed and resolved.
We all know the answers that can lead us from darkness into the light, but we simply have to find a way of awakening these solutions within ourselves. Breathing, in Sam's case, was the key to unlocking this.
Meditation and breath work performed first thing in the morning, can help to set your mind for the rest of the day. Quietening the mind and connecting with something bigger than us is a vital part of showing up effectively.
Stress is a huge driver of human endeavour. Society teaches us that stress makes us somehow efficient, but this is not true. We have the power to manage stress through breath work, and should wield it as a power for good - alleviating stress and taking back control of our minds and bodies.

BEST MOMENTS

'I had an awakening'

'We need to be prepared to go to war within ourselves'

'I'm really interested in breath work for its capacity to help us manage stress'

'Don't get caught up in your own thoughts and your own BS'
