On May 4, 1983, Melody returned home after she had been on a fishing trip with her family. Her brother, Randall, dropped her off at her home, and she asked if he would like to stay the night, which apparently was a regular occurrence for the close knit siblings. That night, however, he decided not to stay. Melody climbed out of the car at 10:30 pm and walked toward her well-lit house. When she arrived, the door was ajar, and her brother noticed there was a man standing in her doorway, assuming the man was Paul. Melody’s brother left, knowing his sister was safely at home with her husband. That was the last time anyone ever saw Melody or her husband Paul alive.
