In this episode of Oh My Heath ... There's HOPE! Jana talks with Dilan Dane.

Dilan Dane is the CEO of System2, the first relationship-based, technology accelerated fitness brand that prioritizes longevity over quick-fix exercise fads.

Dilan grew up in Sri Lanka, South Asia, where his family’s income was less than $20/ a month. Through the kindness and generosity of others, Dilan was able to move to the United States at the age of 20. He received a scholarship and financial aid to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he studied computer science and physics.

His time at MIT was not always easy, as he barely spoke English and experienced social anxiety, making it difficult to find friends. Completely overwhelmed by adapting to both a new culture and an intense curriculum left Dilan physically and mentally exhausted.

After passing out during a final exam - the result of staying up multiple nights due to anxiety and depression - Dilan’s professor reached out, changing the course of Dilan’s life. This professor offered Dilan the chance to retake the exam under the condition that he seek help immediately for his depression. Dilan was grateful for the support and agreed.

Through therapy, Dilan found solace in having someone to talk to who cared for his well-being and encouraged his improvement. The therapist got Dilan to start working out immediately, which allowed for a major breakthrough in Dilan’s life. He credits fitness as the cornerstone of all of his success and progress from that point forward.

After graduating from MIT, Dilan founded the tech company Scoopler, which was acquired by Google in 2011. Dilan then worked at Google as a Senior Engineer and Product Manager for about a year. After Google, Dilan moved to New York City to seek personal growth and completed several meditation retreats. Dilan attributes the move and those retreats to why he is now a much happier and healthier individual. This experience intensified Dilan’s passion for personal growth and helping others achieve the same!
Dilan describes System2’s mission by saying, “Ultimately, we want to make coaching accessible to every human. Today, we start with bringing a personal trainer to every home. Fitness is the first step to happiness and at System2 we want to make sure that our users are aware of this. We intend to maintain an ongoing conversation with our users and the general public on this topic via email and web content, as well as events we'll organize in the future.”

Dilan is based in San Francisco, and his daily routine incorporates; meditation, journaling, affirmations, and working out. Dilan’s biggest hobby is personal growth, but he is also interested in learning about space, macroeconomics, physics, history, and more. He also enjoys traveling and immersing himself in local culture, some of his excursions include traveling to Brazil, Colombia, Thailand, and France.
