The elimination of extreme poverty has been recognized as a global goal. Extreme Poverty was defined in the 1990s by the World Bank in terms of its famous ‘$-a-day’ poverty line. The line has been controversial, in part because it is not clear how anyone could live on one dollar per day. This talk examines a more transparent approach. This new approach is based on people’s needs for food, shelter, and clothing, and it indicates there is more extreme poverty in the world than the $-a-day line shows. This talk also focuses on trends in poverty and inequality.
