Low Back Pain and Erectile Dysfunction

In a recent study of men under the age of 50 years old with lumbar spine disease, 34% also had erectile dysfunction.1 The link between spine disease and sexual potency has long been a subject of speculation. Let's put a few pieces of the ED puzzle together. Your nervous system controls every function in your body. Specifically, the autonomic nervous system is a component of the peripheral nervous system that regulates involuntary physiologic processes including heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, digestion, and sexual arousal. It contains three anatomically distinct divisions: sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric.
This lends credibility to the idea that low back pain which can cause an interruption of the autonomic nerve flow can lead to faulty signals from the brain to the sex organs and muscles that help maintain erections. When discussing low back pain with your doctor it would be a good time to mention that you have some difficulties with sexual performance. Speaking to men, it is also a good reason to have an annual prostate exam to rule out any prostate issues. Please get over the fact that it is an uncomfortable topic to discuss with your doctor, but you have to. Your doctor needs to have all the cards on the table to help you navigate through any and all health problems.
What is the take away here? If you have back pain go see a chiropractor who can help remove nerve interference that could be blocking the autonomic nerve flow besides causing you to have back pain. By the way, there are 2 nerves in the nerve bundle that exits the spine that deal with lower back pain. Consider that in addition to the nerves that regulate involuntary physiologic processes like erections add in the pain nerves and you could have 4 out of 9 nerves involved with simple case of lower back pain. For the record, a chiropractor does not treat erectile dysfunction. If your chiropractor says that he does go find a different chiropractor. Please see a urologist or your primary care physician to have a prostate exam especially if you are over 50 and have low back pain. Sure Advil can get you through the day but don't cover up what seems to be a minor symptom when it can be a more serious underlying medical condition.
