This week a speak to Niamh Uttley about the 1961 version of West Side Story.


Based on the original 1957 stage production which itself is an update of the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare


In the episode which is spoiler filled, we discuss Niamh's reasons for liking the film and the music within it.


We go track by track through the film, with little bursts of the songs as we go.


Quick Film Synopsis:

Two warring New York City gangs The Jets led by Riff and The Sharks, led by Bernardo.

Their hatred escalates to a point where neither can coexist with any form of understanding.

When Riff's best friend (and former Jet) Tony and Bernardo's younger sister Maria meet at a dance, no one can do anything to stop their love.

Maria and Tony begin meeting in secret, planning to run away.

Meanwhile the Sharks and Jets plan a rumble under the highway the winning gange takes control of the streets.

Maria sends Tony to stop it, hoping it can end the violence, it goes terribly wrong, and before the lovers know what's happened, tragedy strikes and doesn't stop until the climactic and heartbreaking ending.
