Surrey City Council defeated a motion to pause development along the proposed Fraser Highway SkyTrain corridor.
It was brought to council by Brenda Locke, and she says the city only has one chance to get the development right. So that needs to include public consultation, and a solid plan for how the land will be used.
But Surrey’s Mayor, Doug McCallum, disagreed with Locke’s point of view.
That was April 15th - so why are we mentioning this now?
Well, Vancouver City Council has chosen to go on a different track.
They have voted to freeze development along the proposed Broadway SkyTrain extension, until a long-term plan can be devised to help protect affordable housing.
Council wants to ensure developers don't snap up housing stock around the proposed route to put up expensive condos.
The move gives the City some breathing room to ensure any rapid transit out to UBC is done the right way.
One of the councillors who voted in favour of that motion is Sarah Kirby-Yung from the NPA.
