London Drugs says that are considering moving head office and distribution centre after government’s delay on Massey crossing

Following the release of the Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure independent review of the George Massey Crossing yesterday, Richmond’s largest business association is expressing disappointment as the project goes back to square one. Richmond Chamber of Commerce Chair Barbara Tinson says that Richmond businesses are losing good employees because of the congestion issues at the Massey crossing. After Monday’s announcement, the Chamber fears that “whatever is finally built will be at or near capacity when it opens”.

Also chiming in on the disappointment is Clint Mahlman, President & Chief Operating Officer of London Drugs. In a release sent out yesterday, Mahlman said that the government’s lack of action on the Massey Crossing is forcing London Drugs to consider moving their head office and distribution centre, currently located in Richmond, to another area without the same congestion issues.

Chapter 3

Tornado in Washington!

A rare tornado touched down in Washington and early reports are showing that it caused some catastrophic damage. It touched down only 70 kilometres away from Seattle. Earlier today on the Jon McComb show, Simi Sara spoke with Kiro Radio’s Hanna Scott about the situation in Washington, outlining the damage that was done.

Based on the fact that there were no real warnings, early reports from social media served as the news for a lot of people.

The mayor of Port Orchard, Robert Putaansuu, spoke to the media earlier this morning as part of a briefing regarding the response to the tornado.

Nuttall and Korody, couple accused in Victoria legislature bomb plot, remain free after B.C. Court of Appeal ruling

British Columbia's Appeal Court has upheld a decision that found a couple accused of plotting to blow up the provincial legislature was entrapped by the RCMP.  In a ruling released today, Justice Elizabeth Bennett writes that while the trial judge made some errors, she did not err in finding that John Nuttall and Amanda Korody were manipulated by RCMP. Bennett ordered a stay of proceedings. The Crown argued at an appeal hearing in January that B.C. Supreme Court Justice Catherine Bruce had no basis to conclude the RCMP manipulated Nuttall and Korody into planting explosive devices around the legislature. In June 2015, a jury found Nuttall and Korody guilty of conspiring to commit murder, possessing an explosive substance and placing an explosive in a public place on behalf of a terrorist group. The convictions were put on hold until 2016 when Bruce ruled they had been entrapped by police, who she said used trickery, deceit and veiled threats to engineer the bomb plot.

Chapter 6

Government of Canada protects two new areas off British Columbia's coast for Resident Killer Whales

Today, the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, is announcing he has created two new areas of critical habitat for iconic Resident Killer Whales. These new areas build on existing critical habitat established in 2009 to protect the marine ecosystem that is necessary for the survival and recovery of the Resident Killer Whales. This announcement builds on the $167 million Whales Initiative announced in 2018 and the October 2018 investment of $61.5 million targeting key threats faced by the Southern Resident Killer Whale, including: ‱lack of available prey (Chinook salmon); ‱acoustic and physical disturbance from marine vessels; and ‱contaminants in the water. Specific measures already introduced to protect this endangered species include expanding vessel slowdowns, enhancing regulatory controls on contaminants and investments aimed at protecting and recovering Chinook salmon stocks. The newly identified areas of critical habitat announced today are located in the waters off the coast of southwestern Vancouver Island, including Swiftsure and La PĂ©rouse Banks, and in western Dixon Entrance, all of which are key foraging areas for both Resident Killer Whales. These new zones will increase the area of critical habitat for endangered killer whales by approximately 6,419 square kilometers to an area of approximately 10,714 square kilometres of Canadian waters. Designating these areas as "critical habitat" ensures they are legally protected against destruction that could hinder survival or recovery of the whales.
