Chapter 6

Is it time for Beyond Meat should look beyond meat?

It has been a year since A&W began offering customers a chance to sink their teeth into the widely buzzed about Beyond Meat burger, and since then, the planted based burger has taken off. Beyond Meat products are now being sold in over 35,000 retail outlets, and the company is now worth $14 billion US and was Wall Street’s best performing IPO this year.

However, not everything is rosy for Beyond Meat. I spoke with Dr. Sylvain Charlebois, Director of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie, about the company and why it recently reported a $10 million loss in its second quarter.

Beyond Meat seems to be something that will be in the market for a long time. To ensure continued success, Dr. Charlebois said that the company needs to create additional products, like alternatives to chicken, fish and pork and stop dividing people and challenging people who do still like to eat meat.  Most importantly though, the cost of Beyond Meat products need to come down as well because it is still seen as a premium product and in some stores the Beyond Meat product is more expensive than meat.
