Chapter 3

6 boys charged after sexual assaults at an all-boys private school in Toronto

Police in Toronto are investigating multiple incidents of alleged sexual assault at an all-boys private school in the city. Videos have been circulating, showing a student being pinned down in a locker room, and being assaulted with a broom handle.

Investigations are now centering on at least four victims - two of assault, and two of sexual assault. Police say there could be more.

As part of the investigation into one of those victims - six boys were arrested this morning, and each have been charged with assault, gang sexual assault, and sexual assault with the weapon. All of them are scheduled to appear in court today. More than 50 witnesses have been identified.

A short time ago, the Unit Commander of Sex Crimes at the Toronto Police Service, Inspector Dominic Sinopoli, updated the media. He begins by telling us about the call police received last Monday - and says much of the information they learned, first came from the media.

Inspector Dominic Sinopoli from the Toronto Police Service. He was asked by reporters if the initial sexual assault video should have been reported by the school last Monday - and to that, he simply replied 'yes'.

He says they are investigating the timing of the reporting, but he’s telling reporters that it’s too early to determine whether charges will be laid in that respect.

Now, another part of the investigation focuses on those videos that are circulating online of the assaults. And Inspector Sinopoli had this warning for any person or organization who has a copy of them.

Now in addition to all of this, there are unconfirmed reports that boys at the school are being threatened - and Inspector Sinopoli says police are monitoring social media - and they will act on any reports of violence, or any threats of reprisal.

Over the weekend, parents approached reporters outside the school, to complain that the media brought these allegations to light. Inspector Sinopoli spoke about that during the press conference this morning.

One more piece of information from that press conference - confirmation from police of a bomb threat at the school - which is the second such threat that police have investigated in the past week.

Breathing polluted air during pregnancy may increase odds of baby having autism: SFU study

A woman breathing polluted air while pregnant is linked to a higher chance of her baby developing autism, a new study from Simon Fraser University suggests. The study, published Monday in JAMA Pediatrics, looked at 132,256 – nearly all – births in Metro Vancouver between 2004 and 2009. Researchers used high-resolution maps of air pollution to measure women’s exposure to fine particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, and nitric oxide during pregnancy and then looked to see whether autism rates were different for children of women living in more polluted parts of the region. The results showed a slightly increased risk of autism in children whose would-be mothers had been exposed to nitric oxide, but not fine particulate matter or nitrogen dioxide.

Jamie Koe

N.W.T. curling star Jamie Koe is apologizing for his team's drunken behaviour in an Alberta bonspeil that led to them being disqualified and kicked out of a curling club.

Koe and teammates Ryan Fry, Chris Schille and DJ Kidby were kicked out and disqualified from the Red Deer Curling Classic for getting too drunk during the event.

On Monday, Koe and Schille both issued public apologies on Twitter to fans and event staff on Twitter.

During the team's match in the 'B' draw — a consolation round — Fry broke three brooms.

Koe said that he removed himself from the match because he was too drunk to play, leaving his team shorthanded.

After the match, Fry put a hole in the wall of one of the locker rooms at the Pidherney Curling Club in Red Deer, Alta.

Team Koe was then kicked out of the arena and forfeited their next match, said Wade Thurber, the manager of the curling club.

Thurber said that Fry has offered to pay for the damages to the locker room.
