Chapter 1

đŸ”„đŸ”„ Hot question of the day đŸ”„đŸ”„

Union negotiators say there was little progress made in the two-and-a-half weeks that a special mediator was assigned to the Canada Post labour dispute.  Canadian Union of Postal Workers national president Mike Palecek says the union is frustrated by what he describes as the unwillingness of Canada Post to address key concerns raised at the bargaining table.

CUP-W says rotating strikes will continue across the country, even as contract talks are ongoing a day after mediator Morton Mitchnick's mandate expired.  Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last week warned that his government may soon act if there is no solid progress in the talks, which have been ongoing for nearly a year.

The rotating strikes at Canada Post hit the lower mainland again. With Christmas approaching, is it time for the government to legislate Canada Post workers back to work?

Yes

No

Chapter 2

America, The Farewell Tour

America, says Pulitzer Prize–winning reporter Chris Hedges, is convulsed by an array of pathologies that have arisen out of profound hopelessness, a bitter despair, and a civil society that has ceased to function. The opioid crisis; the retreat into gambling to cope with economic distress; the pornification of culture; the rise of magical thinking; the celebration of sadism, hate, and plagues of suicides are the physical manifestations of a society that is being ravaged by corporate pillage and a failed democracy. As our society unravels, we also face global upheaval caused by catastrophic climate change. All these ills presage a frightening reconfiguration of the nation and the planet.Donald Trump rode this disenchantment to power. In his “forceful and direct” (Publishers Weekly) America: The Farewell Tour, Hedges argues that neither political party, now captured by corporate power, addresses the systemic problem. Until our corporate coup d’état is reversed these diseases will grow and ravage the country. “With a trademark blend of
sharply observed detail, Hedges writes a requiem for the American dream” (Kirkus Reviews) and seeks to jolt us out of our complacency while there is still time.

Chapter 3

History of Keeping Calm & Carrying On

Yesterday marked the 100th anniversary of the armistice that brought an end to World War I. But of course, that wouldn’t be the end of warfare in Europe. 20 years later, World War II would trigger more death and mayhem for a new generation. And CKNW listeners of course will remember the multitude of terrorist attacks London has faced throughout the decades. Yet through it all, the British have been well-respected for keeping a “stiff upper lip” in the face of war and adversity. It was in that country of course where the famous slogan “keep calm and carry on” was born.

So as we remember veterans this month, let’s also remember the civilians who bravely kept calm and carried on when their nation was under attack.

Listen now to a feature by Niki Reitmayer that explores the history of the slogan “keep calm and carry on.”

Chapter 4

Stan Lee, the man who co-created Marvel Comics, has died.According to reports, an ambulance rushed to Lee's Hollywood Hills home early Monday morning and he was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. It is reported that he passed away while in the hospital. Lee was 95 years old.

Lee had suffered several illnesses over the last year or so -- he had a bout of pneumonia and vision issues.Stan started Marvel with Jack Kirby in 1961 with The Fantastic Four. He went on to create Spider-Man, Black Panther, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men, Iron Man and The Avengers.

Lee's final few years were tumultuous. After Joan, his wife of 69 years, died in July 2017, he sued executives at POW! Entertainment — a company he founded in 2001 to develop film, TV and video game properties — for $1 billion for fraud, then abruptly dropped the suit weeks later. He also sued his ex-business manager and filed for a restraining order against a man who had been handling his affairs. (Lee's estate was estimated to be worth as much as $70 million.) And in June 2018, it was revealed that the Los Angeles Police Department had been investigating reports of elder abuse against him.

In 2009, the Walt Disney Co. bought Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion, and most of the top-grossing superhero films of all time — led by The Avengers' $1.52 billion worldwide take in 2012 — featured Marvel characters.
