Today we join Jesus early in his ministry. He is actively working—preaching, teaching and healing. Yet as Jesus looks out at the crowd he sees people who are “harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” He sees ripe fields ready for harvest. What is Christ’s solution? Looking through his eyes, we see the need for the Good Shepherd to bring these sheep into his flock. We hear him speak of the need for workers in his harvest fields, so the Good Shepherd provides shepherds for his flock and workers for his harvest fields. Jesus sends some to work in his harvest fields as public ministers, but he also sends all of us out as his royal priests and as workers in his harvest fields. Empowered by Christ’s compassion for us, we go!
