Many of my physician colleagues and friends tell me that they are overwhelmed, overworked, stretched too thin, unsatisfied, and unfulfilled with the work that they are doing. At the heart of it, they feel that becoming a physician or a nurse would have led to a "good life"--a life of happiness.

And why not? The role of a physician or nurse is honorable, terrific, altruistic, and life-giving. Yet, as physicians, we have been trained to work hard, study hard, and we will ultimately "succeed" and reach this vague land called "happiness." There is a false perception in medicine that being happy is within one's reach if one would just try hard enough.

And that's precisely where the problem starts.
