Steve Adock is an entrepreneur, writer, and photographer who left a 15-year career in corporate Information Technology to pursue the unconventional life of ‘off-grid’ living in the desert with his wife, Courtney, to make adventure and travel their priority. ‘Retiring’ at the age of 35 has allowed Steve to focus on his passion projects and allocate time to causes and start-up businesses in which he truly believes. He is the author of Big Money: A Professionals Guide to Financial Freedom and a Rich Retirement, where 25% of every copy sold goes to STEM and technology-related charities in payback to the industry that allowed him and his wife to quit the rat-race early. Steve and Courtney travel the country in their Airstream RV with their two rescue dogs Penny and Patti. Their story has been covered by major media outlets including Forbes, Business Insider, CNBC, and Vice.

In today’s episode, Steve shares his secret to escaping the rat-race WAY before regular retirement age and the pivotal moment he realized all the wealth he had accumulated until then still didn't make him feel fulfilled. He explains the concept of F.I.R.E (financial independence, retire early), which encourages the high earners who practice it to shun lavish lifestyles, save the majority of their earnings and quit to pursue a life free of the work grind. Steve reveals the conversations he and his wife would repeatedly revisit in the quest to stay disciplined in pursuit of their work-free adventure and how this reinforced their commitment when forgoing new cars, holidays, and fancy restaurants. We also discuss the mental blocks that can hold us back and why overcoming imposter syndrome is the first step to discovering the challenges are not as difficult as you imagine them to be.
