Welcome to week #5 of the Building Your Best Self Series, a 13-episode mini adventure to call forth your best self as you head into 2022.

Most of our efforts to change our behaviors, to go after what we want in life, fail.

They fail not because we lack motivation, but because changing our behaviors is the wrong place to start. We must start with changing our identity.

Your identity, who you believe yourself to be, is the single biggest driver of your actions, the goals you set, the relationships you enter, how you feel about yourself, and what you believe yourself capable of.

So the question becomes, how much of your identity have you chosen…and how much is unconscious?

James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, may have a clue for us. He says:

“The word identity was originally derived from the Latin words essentitas, which means being, and, identidem, which means repeatedly. Your identity is literally your “repeated beingness.”

Said differently, the repetition of your thoughts, the repetition of your actions, the proof and evidence you’ve collected along the way forms your belief systems about yourself.

But all of those things are rooted in the past. Your present day identity is much more an artifact of the past than a conscious creation of the future. Those repeated thoughts, actions, outcomes, all happened in the past.

Which begs the question, from this point forward, who is the man you are determined to become…and what are the daily actions you will take to bring that man into being?
