On the first Thursday of the 2023 NCAA tournament, the upsets started early and continued throughout the day. In the first game, 13-seed Furman advanced after an improbable game-winning 3-pointer by JP Pegues against 4-seed Virginia. In the second game, 15-seed Princeton overcame a 10-point deficit to defeat 2-seed Arizona. ESPN's expert panel, comprising Jeff Borzello, John Gasaway, and Myron Medcalf, analyze the South region and the impact of these upsets. Medcalf believes that Arizona played with arrogance, which led to their loss, while Gasaway credits Princeton's defense for keeping Arizona from getting second chances. Virginia's slow tempo and poor shooting were the main reasons for their loss to Furman. Borzello thinks that Furman could make it to the Sweet 16 if they avoid foul trouble and that San Diego State will be a challenge for them. The panel is divided on whether Princeton will win their second-round match against Missouri. The upsets have changed the outlook of the South region of the men's March Madness bracket, which was previously dominated by Alabama.
