I have too many responsibilities to chase my dream. I have to put food on the table. I have to keep the lights.

My only real option is to just keep going on the path that I’m on (even if I don’t love it).

Have you ever thought something like that? I know I have.

I’m fired up to have Kevin Miller on the show today who’s filled with incredible wisdom from battling, and winning, these same questions with over a thousand other business owners.

Kevin shares:

the often overlooked aspect of self-employment that holds people back (including himself)
the most important thing his dad, Dan Miller, taught him growing up
why finding fulfilling work is a responsibility, not a luxury

Listen now: 030: What I’ve learned helping 1,000+ people pursue self-employment (with Kevin Miller)

Rapid Fire Questions

One thing that was holding Kevin back:

Consistency. Kevin’s spontaneous nature can lack the consistency of actions required to build a brand and a business.

One thing Kevin gave up to become more successful:

Resisting the rigidity of scheduling and structure to his week. He’s still spontaneous and still enjoys the freedom of being a Free Agent, but accepting scheduling, routine, and rhythm allows him to be more consistent and reach more people.

One characteristic that sets Kevin apart:

Kevin believes finding fulfilling work is a responsibility, not a luxury.

Men, you need to provide more for your family than money. When you work at something you’re inspired in then you bring that fullness of heart home. When you’re slogging away for a paycheck then you’re robbing your family of that fullness.

(Kevin talks about this subject a ton over at Free Agent Uprising. Head on over if this hit you over the head too)

One belief that Kevin developed along the way:

You don’t have to accept what’s offered.

There is a strong pull in our culture to choose from what’s offered. Anytime you step outside that flow and choose your own path it’s lonely and scary, but it’s also the most rewarding thing you can do.

Book Recommendation

I’m going to preface this with Kevin’s testimony because it’s so powerful:

No other book that I know has changed so many peoples’ lives. Not just that they were inspired or motivated by it, but people are actually reading this and making real, lasting change in their life

A Million Miles in a Thousand Years by Donald Miller.
