Today we are discussing the yoga sutra of Pratipaksha Bhavana, the concept of opposites. It states “when disturbed by negative thoughts, opposite ones should be thought of.” Nathalie discusses how to practice Pratipaksha Bhavana, the power of contemplation, and coming back to yourself.

Pratipaksha Bhavana can be used when you are in a state of emotional turbulence to help you release painful and destructive emotions. If you can practice this, it can help you reach a higher place spiritually. It is easier said than done to set aside those feelings. Over time, we become psychologically and neurologically habituated to the experience.

Removing yourself from the situation can help you with that release and offer perspective. The practice of Pratipaksha Bhavana is about contemplation of the opposite. Ask yourself if you are addicted to the sensations negative emotions produce. If so, ask yourself if you really need to be connected to extremes all the time. Feel your breath and focus on your body.

Consistent practice and dedication are the foundation of all yoga. Love, peace, and harmony are the natural states of our souls and through practice you can align. With continuous work and curiosity, you can learn how to come back to yourself.
